GMO Argumentative Essay

1540 Words4 Pages

About 90% of the United States crops are genetically modified so imagine not having GM crops. A GMO (genetically modified organism) is a gene that is changed in a way that does not happen naturally, humans change genes characteristics to change the outcome of a plants growth, color, nutrients and etc. GMOs are very useful because they can prevent species from going extinct, and can prevent the loss of species before they become extinct. The U.S. has many problems that make GMOs very crucial to keeping our food supply such as climate change, habitat loss, diseases, and other environmental causes. Genetically modifying foods have saved and continued to save food, humans, plants and the environment from the changes that the world has gone through …show more content…

The U.S. has many elements from climate change, diseases and habitat loss that will put many plants in danger. Genetically modifying foods can save or restore some of the damage that has already been caused and is continuing to happen from the changes in the world. Using traits from another species that is not related to the threatened species can save a plant that is endangered. Transgenic breeding allows us to tailor plants to our liking, this can prevent plants from going extinct because when a plant is endangered scientist combine it with another species to hopefully reproduce the endangered plant. Humans underestimate that, “The idea of using GM technology in defense of a plant is not new. One of the best-known examples is the successful effort in the 1990s to save Hawaii’s papaya industry. It was devastated by ringspot virus, which first showed up in the 1950s, but spread through the islands in the following decades. Researchers used genetic material from the virus to reinvigorate the Rainbow papaya, which resists ringspot and now represents nearly 80 percent of the state’s papaya crop” (Can GMOs Rescue Threatened Plants and Crops?). GMOs have already saved one species of plants and will continue to save endangered species with the use of transgenic breeding, creating plant hybrids and modifying genes. Human beings also miscalculate that “Two crops, banana and cassava, in particular are endangered, and not rescuing them could have a serious impact on the economies of many African countries. Using genetic engineering could save these crops as well as provide a boom for Africa’s wealth and self-sufficiency” (Can GMOs rescue threatened plants and crops?). GMOs can change food for the better, they can remove genes to make plants last longer and not catch diseases to prevent extinction. Genetically modifying plants may be the only way
