The Double By Fyodor Dostoyevsky The Double by Fyodor Dostoyevsky ia about a delicate and pretentious clerk Golyadkin, already unhinged by the social pressures of his office and by unrequited love, encounters a Doppelgänger who is the leader of a conspiracy against him. The double focuses on a man who while in his search for total freedom and expression of himself, becomes a self-destructive maniac. In The Double Golyadkin Sr. is the protagonist and Golyadkin Jr.is the antagonist. The doppelgängers are friends in the beginning of their affiliation, but when Golyadkin Jr. attempts to take over Sr.'s life, and they become enemies. The conflict stems from their contrasting ideas and personalities, Golyadkin Jr. has all the charm and social skills that Golyadkin Sr. lacks, and he is more liked among the office colleagues. Therefore he is seen ass the better Doppelgänger. In the end of The Double, Golyadkin Sr. begins to see many replicas of himself, and has a psychotic break. He is then dragged off to an asylum by Doctor Rutenspitz. …show more content…

From the beginning of The Double the scenery sets a specific mood for that scene. “ The mucky greenish, soot-begrimed, dusty walls of his little room…”( Dostoevsky 3) This quote describes a bland and unorganized room, this relates directly to the owner of the room, Golyadkin Sr., he lack social skills and his mind is crazed and unorganized. Another specific scene in which the setting creates mood is when Golyadkin Sr. first sees his double, “The wind howled in the deserted streets, raising the black water of the Fontanka above the streets…” (Dostoevsky 49), This matches the scene by displaying mystery and overall
