Midwife nurses are qualified health care professionals that provide care for pregnant women throughout their time of pregnancy. They participate in a pregnant women’s antenatal examinations as the primary care provider and provide the required care and follow-up for the first six weeks following the birth (Prospects 2017). This essay discusses the different roles and responsibilities that a midwife nurse plays in his or her career. The essay also highlights different skills that set a midwife nurse requires to exercise their duty properly. The essay will also evaluate my own skills in relation to my chosen career as a future midwife nurse.
One of the important roles that the midwife nurse plays is the role of an educator. The midwife nurse’s job does not only start when a pregnant woman is in labour. The midwife nurse educates women before pregnancy, during pregnancy and after birth. The midwife nurse, for example, gives advice to pregnant women on better lifestyle practices that will ensure the safety and better development of the baby in the womb. As an educator, the midwife runs classes about pregnancy and parenting (National Career Service 2017). According to Yale School of Nursing (2017), midwife nurses have a focus on women and their families and they offer a holistic care to support the whole family. The WHO (2010) also states that nurses and midwives are one of the front-line care services in Primary Health Care. Nurses and midwives "reach out and reach further" and their care is people-centred.
