Into the Mind of Darkness "You cannot have [the] power for good without having [the] power for evil too. [And], even mother's milk nourishes murderers as well as heros, [besides what man was ever content with just one crime]." (Mitchell). In the past decade, an elusive creature has capture the attention of the American society as well as a few Eurpoean nations. In the twisted psychotic minds of the these individualistic creatures who murder constantly to appease their hunger, life, sex, pain and death are fashioned into a passion to kill.
With hundreds of unsolved murders, many of them could be put to rest with the death of Ted Bundy. He will always be regarded as one of the most gruesome murders in history. Some of these murders including the Chi Omega and Leech murders could have been prevented had Ted not been such a witty criminal. In profiling a serial killer, law enforcers realize that serial killers are not unlike regular people; there are several exceptions like schizophrenics but most of them look like everyone else. Serial killers, often, do not just kill, they might also eat their victims, torture, or rape them, and then they finish them off. A serial killer is different from a mass murderer, in that mass murderers kill many people in one instance, whereas serial killers annihilate individuals one at a time and do not go on to kill again until a month or so has passed. There is much agreement that all serial killers deserve to be punished it is how they are punished that brings in controversy. Another aspect of serial killers are their motives, why do they do what they do?
Almost all people know who serial killers are, but what exactly defines a serial killer. The FBI defines serial murder as “a minimum of three to four victims with a ‘cooling off’ period between, the killer is usually a stranger to the victim, the murders reflect a need to sadistically dominate the victim, and the murder is rarely for profit.” (Vronsky, 2004, p.36) Serial killers are usually a white male from a lower-to-middle-class background typically in his twenties or thirties. Also, 85% of the world’s serial killers live in America, with at least twenty to fifty unidentified active serial killers plotting another one of their killings. On average, every person has seen or met at least 37 serial killers in their lifespan. Serial killing, although not in the same form, has been around since the beginning of time.

A serial killer's murdering spree is methodical and extremely well planned, and the motive usually is to get even (Douglas, p. 137). A serial killer often plans his crimes extremely carefully. Serial killer's have little self-esteem and a sociopath's inability to feel other people's pain or sorrow for any wrongful acts that they have committed (Casey, p. 80). Levin points out that all told about 500 people die a year at the hand of a serial killer.
“Roughly 40% of all reported murderers were neglected in childhood and carried psychopathic characteristics” (“Serial Killers” 2). There is no complete answer for why serial murderers kill, but there is contributing reasons why. As the serial murder outbreak begins to rise, scientists are working to give the world an answer. Serial murderers are the terrors of common society. They are the shadows in the hall and the bump in the night, but there is so much more to these killers.
These were terribly gruesome murders that left ten dead, three critically wounded including pedestrians, motorists pumping gas, shoppers, a schoolboy, and a bus driver. One of the most interesting things about this case is how he chose his victims. Many experts agree that serial killers have a vision in mind of the type of victim they would prefer. This person would be chosen based on race, gender, physical characteristics, or some other specific quality; However the Beltway sniper victims had absolutely nothing connecting them. He was choosing his victims at random.
