Everyone deserves to have a great friendship. A great friendship does not mean being friends with someone because they are cool or popular. Your true friends are the one who are kind to you, respect you, and adore you for who you are. They don’t judge you by your appearance. In the realistic fiction novel, Freak The Mighty, written by Rodman Philbrick, the main characters are two boys in 7th grade. One oversized giant and a disabled brainiac learn the power of love and friendship. Together they conquer quests, tower high above the sky, beat the bad guys, and build a unbelievable friendship. Not only is the power of friendship important, but you should never judge someone based on appearance.

To start, the first theme is if you judge someone by appearance, you might miss out on an amazing soul. A major theme is appearance because in the novel, Max and Freak are both judged a lot by their looks. They both have a disability. Freak is tiny and has Morquio Syndrome, while Max is huge, has a learning disability, and has a father who kills people and is in jail. Everyone thinks Max is just like his father, Killer Kane. Although he is a spitting image of his father, Max is truly a sincere and loving person once you get to know him. Although, not everyone sees this in Max.As stated in the novel, “ ‘The boy, is like him, we’d better watch out you never know what he might do while we’re asleep’ ”(pg.4). They think just because Max looks like his father that he is a bad person. He would never do something like that, but Grim and Gram did not know that. They judged him based on his looks. This is another major theme because Max always wanted to be by himself his whole life, until Freak came along. Freak changed his life and was true friend. They helped each other out with everything, and became Freak The Mighty. In the text it says, “That’s when Freak squeezed the trigger and sprays him right in the eyes. Then Killer Kane is screaming in this high, scared voice…. The next thing I know, I have Freak in my arms and I’m running through the dark for the stairs…. ‘Go!’ Freak is yelling. ‘He’s right behind you, go!’ “(pg.132). Max was getting choked to death, and Freak was a great friend and saved his life. Without Freak, Max would have died and would not have any friends, and without Max, Freak would never have had the chance to go on quests and all that with a true friend. Most friends would not face a killer, but Freak did. He was brave and a true friend. Additionally the theme of friendship is shown when Freak teaches Max big, new words. In the text it states, “And he says something like, ‘All mechanical objects require periodic maintenance. We’ll schedule installation of a new propulsion unit as soon as the Fair Gwen of Air gets a replacement.’ “ (pg.13). Then Freak would have to explain thing like that.
