Separate Peace Essay In the book, ‘A Separate Peace’, there are many friendship and rivalries. During the school year at Devon, there is a war going on. So everyone's on edge. Going to a prep school you can expect that kids will be jealous of each other, and that’s what happened. In the book there were multiple rivalries and a lot of envy between Gene, Finny, and Brinker. In the book,‘A Separate Peace’, Gene is very envious of Finny. At the beginning of the story, Finny called gene his best friend and Gene said nothing. Gene couldn’t handle the fact that Finny was more compassionate, athletic, and so perfect. “Phineas could get away with anything.” In order to protect himself from accepting Finny’s compassion and risking emotional suffering, Gene creates
Finny and Brinker compete for Gene’s loyalty. Finny realizes that Gene and Brinker were close when he was gone. You can tell Finny is jealous of Brinker and Gene’s friendship. Finny starts to be rude to Brinker. Gene realizes that Finny needs him and decides to side with Finny. There for making Brinker jealous of their friendship. He sees that despite Gene hating Finny he will always be loyal to him.
I know how Funny felt. Brinker was trying to steal his best friend. Not only was Finny angry at Brinker, he was sad. His anger caused him to be mean to Brinker even after he got Gene back. Finny felt threatened by Brinker because of Brinker and Gene’s friendship. Finny saw that everyone at Devon had turned to Brinker while he was gone, including Gene, causing Finny to be jealous. Eventually Devon welcomed Finny back with open arms.
In the novel,” A Separate Peace,” there are many rivalries. Gene’s secret rivalry was the worst. He was supposed to be Finny’s best friend, and in a way Finny betrayed him. Brinker was just cruel. Brinker wanted to be friends with Gene, but Finny was in the way causing them to be jealous of each other. In the end, jealousy and rivalry killed

This creates a conflict for Gene as he is not able to deal with Finny's purity and his own dark emotions. On this very day Finny wants to jump off of the tree branch into the Devon river at the same time as Gene, a "double jump" (p. 51), he says, as a way of bonding. It was this decision, caused by Finny's affection for Gene and outgoing ways that resulted in drastic change for the rest of his life.
