In 1941 the citizens of Germany were facing many forms of oppression, discrimination, economic hardship, and injustice. World War II was in full swing and Adolph Hitler had orchestrated an army of soldiers who had been ordered to rid Germany of all the unwanted minority groups including those who identified themselves as Jewish, gay and the disabled. Hitler’s attempt in creating a master race brought fear and hopelessness to many. As his troops invaded Germany, families were torn apart; people were killed in their homes or sent to concentration camps while others were restricted in areas known as the Ghettos. In spite of all the despair and oppression many found the strength to fight for their survival and in doing so empowered others to do the same. A great example of such strength and resilience is the Bieski Brothers; Tuvia and Zus who lived in Germany in 1941. Their story of survival was depicted in the movie, Defiance. There is a particular scene in the movie that demonstrated this need of humanity and freedom. The scene takes place in the very beginning stage, when the community began to form. Tuvia made a statement to the others survivors, “Revenge is to live, live free like humans for as long as we can, every day of freedom is an act of praise, if we shall die, then die like human beings”. This scene was very powerful and his message to others set the tone for the central theme of the movie. Although these victims of discrimination, oppression, and economic hardship were driven from their homes and families with little to no belongings they came together, helped one another, and created an environment that allowed for them to hold on to their integrity and
