Free Is Expensive Does making college tuition free in America actually sound possible? At first thought the concept draws the support of many, however the reality is that nothing in this world is actually free. Unfortunately the shortcuts in life that many think of always fail. Even the best free college tuition plan created by Americans falls into the pile of failed ideas. Free higher education seems practical and beneficial for society until a numerous detailed looks are taken. While it is true that free tuition is already used some smaller countries, the fact of the matter is that America has historically show to be at its best when its society endures hard work rather than receiving a free ride. Any attempt to install a free college learning experience in America should not be supported because it would require a tax raise that slows economic growth drastically, students would treat college how they treat high school, and tax money should be used for budgets that are needed rather than wanted. When a tax raise occurs, people stop giving the economy the money it needs to run functionally because competition among businesses diminishes while unemployment rises. Instead that money is now going to taxes which have deadly effects. Society makes their financial decisions based on the state of the economy meaning that once an economy weakens, many things have gone wrong. When it comes to monetary value, businesses are at their best when they are competing. In a non-competitive environment, owners do not learn what works best for their company. Managers also no longer learn how to manage a diverse range of employees. Universities sole focus should be the education quality, so in the case that more money is given to them instead of students, they will have the funds they need without increasing tuition even more. Their focus should then shift to making sure students graduate and do it on time so that they are not accumulating any large debt. The way to do this is by hiring the best quality professors and developing new teaching methods which is possible if the money is shifted to the right place. Making everything free will never solve the problem and those that think it will need to look back to when America was number one in college graduation rate when tuition was still not free. When the time comes that America has the best college graduation rate again it will be solely because of the success rate of students attending.

There is no doubt that college is expensive, price tags for some universities go over a quarter of a million for just a bachelors degree! (That’s if you graduate in four too). The extravagant price for college is no doubt crazy. Trying to better yourself and your future shouldn’t cost $250,000 plus. If public universities were to be free a plethora of problems could be solved instantly. According to Forbes the National student loan debt has surpassed 1.2 trillion dollars (Denhart )! This number is growing exponentially as more students enroll in to college. Why question then whether college should be free? Well, this number is the total amount of student loan debt from all students that have exited college. Some of these students are freshly graduated while some are aged with the wisdom trying to pay their loans back. If public universities were to be free and funded by our federal government, our government would pay this amount within ten years. Relatively a short amount of time considering that the student loan debt is an accumulation debt from students that have graduated more than ten year ago, also this also greatly increase with the following years as well.

Sometimes I think about how America’s founding father’s intended to guarantee everyone a free education; not a professional education, but the basics anyone needs in to be accepted in society. Unfortunately, I think the standards have changed. College is now just as necessary as high school. Does that mean it should be free? This has been a quiet issue going around in America among our youth because they the financing of college. Lowered, yes. Free, no. College is a privilege, not a luxury. It is only mandatory to get a high school education for most basic jobs that should be able to let you survive on your own. Everywhere else in the world college is free but the United States. I believe that people would feel more obligated to go to college if it was free. College is the main reason Americans are having to live such a hard lifestyle. My father did not go to college and makes eighteen dollars an hour. On the other hand my aunt did go to college and make twenty-four dollars an hour but is still paying back student loans so after paying all of her stuff back she only makes around fifteen dollars an hour that she gets to bring back and that doesn’t include taxes.
