APA Style Sample
APA (American Psychological Association) style is primarily used in the social science disciplines. It is formatted like MLA, and shows many similarities, but is unique in several key points.
APA uses parenthetical (or in-text) citations within sentences, but rather than indicating the author's name and page number, APA includes author's name and date of publication. The page number, represented with a p. or a pp., is only added to the citation when using a direct quote (not a summary or paraphrase). If the author's name is mentioned in the sentence, then place the date of publication in parentheses directly after the name. If the name is not mentioned include the author's name and date in parentheses at the end of the source material. And, if you use a direct quote, place the page number after the publication date within the parentheses. Note the difference between the following three examples:

I was a little taken back when I realized that the entire book is a Christian testimony, following the familiar pattern: man experiences trials, man denies God, man finds God. The focus on spirituality overshadows the cold case study and hard facts on DNA evidence that the reader expects. Even so, the sheer power of Johnson's story overcomes the narrative flaws and keeps the reader interested throughout. Plus, the sincerity of his Christian beliefs adds a completely different level to his compelling story. It becomes an account of a man, not just finding truth in the legal system, but also discovering a spiritual truth which guides him out of the darkness of captivity, freeing him mind, body, and soul.

Use the Table/Figure style, available on the Home tab, in the Styles gallery, to get the spacing between table and note. Tables in APA format can use single or 1.5 line spacing. Include a heading for every row and column, even if the content seems obvious. A default table style has been setup for this template that fits APA guidelines. Since its start, the television industry has been criticized for perpetuating myths and stereotypes about African-Americans through characterizations, story lines, and plots. The situation comedy has been the area that has seemed to draw the most criticism, analysis, and disapproval for stereotyping. From Sanford and Son and The Jefferson’s in the 1970s to The Cosby Show (1984) and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the 1990s, sitcoms featuring black casts and characters have always been controversial. However, their significance upon our American culture cannot be disregarded. During the 1950s and 1960s, 97% of the families were Caucasian. In the first five years of the 1990s, nearly 14% of the television families were African-American (Bryant 2001). These statistics obviously show the substantial impact our American culture has had on African-American television families.
Chapter 3 of the APA Publication Manual was a reminder of many grammatical and writing issues need to be focused on when writing manuscripts and reports. As a professional it is important to know how to be clear and concise in what is being said. It is important to understand that as a school counselor writing and precision are necessary. Chapter 3 focuses on the organization, writing style, reduction of bias in language, grammar and grammar usage.
Do you ever have one of those days when you remember your parents taking away all of your baseball cards or all of your comic books because you got a bad grade in one of your classes? You feel a little depressed and your priced possession has been stolen. This event is the same as August Wilson’s, The Piano Lesson. The story is about a sibling rivalry, Boy Willie Charles against Berniece Charles, regarding an antique, family inherited piano. Boy Willie wants to sell the piano in order to buy the same Mississippi land that his family had worked as slaves. However, Berniece, who has the piano, declines Boy Willie’s request to sell the piano because it is a reminder of the history that is their family heritage. She believes that the piano is more consequential than “hard cash” Boy Willie wants. Based on this idea, one might consider that Berniece is more ethical than Boy Willie.

Herman Melville’s stories of Moby Dick and Bartleby share a stark number of similarities and differences. Certain aspects of each piece seem to compliment each other, giving the reader insight to the underlying themes and images. There are three concepts that pervade the two stories making them build upon each other. In both Moby Dick and Bartleby the main characters must learn how to deal with an antagonist, decide how involved they are in their professions, and come to terms with a lack of resolution.
2. Also when quoting you must always place in parentheses the name of the author and the page on which the quote can be found. This way your readers can look up the quotes for themselves.
3. When quoting, the parentheses, which hold the page number, should come after the quotation marks and the punctuation should come after the parentheses. An example of a correctly cited quote would be “A spell was broken” (251). Instead of “a spell was broken (251)”.
APA style is very important in all types of careers and school papers and research papers. The importance for this style paper is because it is usually seven pages long and the paper gives specific information and easy way to access the information. If you’re looking for something specific the headings in the paper help you know where to look without going through everything.
The first page of your APA style research paper is the point where a great deal of formatting takes place, and for clear reasons it is the primary spot where any blunders get to be glaring mistakes, so taking care of it from the begin is key.
Prior to the advancement of technology, print media had become a primary method of communicating information. The information people were unable to learn through
That this danger can only be fought with instinct and ignorance reveals the extent to which man is denied consequential free will. Ishmael explains how the whale-line weaves its way around the whale-boat, involving all of the sailors in one dangerous net: “the whale-line folds the whole boat in its complicated coils, twisting and writhing around it in almost every direction” (229). By making the whale-line the subject of an active voice sentence, Melville assigns it an authority over man: the rope, not man, dictates the action. Moreover, the rope’s serpentine description attributes a malicious intelligence to danger. Whereas danger can rationally scheme, man is left powerless, merely a part of the unthinking “whole boat”. As the snake imagery repeatedly emerges, it engulfs the sentence with an overbearing sense of helplessness: Melville strips the reader of his ability to avoid the snake, thus using imagery of danger to destroy the free will of the reader. Ishmael continues, describing a landsman’s interpretation of the whale-line: “To the timid eye of the landsman, [the oars-men] seem as Indian jugglers, with the deadliest snakes sportively festooning their limbs” (229). Viewing the situation realistically, the landsman clearly understands the danger inherent in the oars-men’s predicament. Yet, Melville mocks the landsman as fearful because he thinks rationally. Melville attempts to make the realistic seem absurd through his jarring juxtaposition of image: lethal snakes are being used as playful decorations. In this attempt to deny the dangerous reality of the situation any realistic appeal, Melville once again rejects rational
Newspapers have a long history of being regarded as a useful educational tool, and their use in a classroom setting dates back further than most might expect. Take, for instance, this quotation:
With text citations, MLA uses the author’s last name and page number while APA uses the publication date as well. APA style is used for science writing; therefore, the publication date is important to add. MLA and APA formatting may be different, but they have the same common goal. That goal is to cite the sources properly by using in-text citations, which leads the reader to the last page of the paper which is “Works Cited” for MLA papers and “References” for APA papers. APA style is generally used for social sciences, education, psychology, and sociology while MLA style is used for Humanities, English, Philosophy, and History according to Dolsy Smith’s “Citation Style Guides”. The most commonly used citation in high school is the MLA8. According to Michael Greer (a lecturer at the University of Arkansas), the handbook is “streamlined and flexible” and a lot shorter than MLA7 ("Streamlining Citations”).
