Tell us about an opinion you have had to defend
Tell us about an opinion you have had to defend. How has this affected your belief system?
I chuckle to myself every time I think about this. I am perceived as a mild-mannered, intelligent individual until I mention that I am involved in riflery. It is interesting to watch someone's expression change. It is as if I instantaneously grew a pair of horns and a sharp set of claws. Believe me this gets worse; I am a member of the NRA. I try to tell these folks that I belong to the NRA to fire my rifle. "Oh my God! You fire real guns? with real bullets?!?" they remark with a perplexed look on their face. Besides having horns and claws, I now possess a tail and leathery wings.
This is how it began five years ago. I had played on a soccer team for several years. As I grew older I began having difficulty playing soccer because of shortness of breath. I was diagnosed as having mild asthma which ended my soccer career and eliminated my participation in most physical sports.
Shortly afterward, during a Boy Scout summer camp, I participated in riflery at their shooting range. This was the first time I had ever touched a firearm. To my amazement, I won the camp's first place award for marksmanship. I was more than eager when a friend of mine asked me if I would like to join a shooting club.
My parents were wary when I asked to join the rifle club. My mother feared guns, but my father felt there was no problem with trying this sport. Gratefully, he gave me the opportunity to try rifle marksmanship, despite secretly hoping that I would quit. Both of my parents were afraid of what people would think about their son's involvement with guns.
Like my parents a majority of people believe that all firearms are dangerous to our society. All they remember are the hysterical news releases of street violence and injured children. I am often asked how many deer I've shot. Frankly, I could never bring myself to injure another living creature and neither would most of the competitors I have met. Yet, I keep finding myself defending the sport from all of the misconceptions that surround it.
There have been several incidents where a child in the household has mistaken a gun for a toy and have mortally wounded himself and others with it. There have also been occasions where careless gun owners have left their guns loaded and have accidentally shot someone. Studies have shown that four people die each day due to accidental gun fire. Anti-gun users have pointed out that states that have relaxed their gun laws have had an increases in homicides. Also just because its anyone’s right to own a gun does not mean that they went through any sort of training to be able to use that gun. Most anti-gun users argue that most of these people who buy guns need to be properly trained before they can operate a gun, in order to prevent innocent and unnecessary harm or
Because as long as I live, I aim to find my purpose, my voice, which I find most during my times of advocacy.
...ter. Hunters and people who use guns for sport should have no trouble possessing guns if they are emotionally sound so it isn’t exactly a problem for anyone.
At the age of 12 my Dad told me I would finally be able to go hunting with him, if I wanted. Although a pistol can be used, a...
When there is a negative, there will always be a positive. When youth go through those means of learning how to fully operate a gun, they can know what will not be in their best interest. Gun advocates generally believe that youth gun violence is a problem rooted in culture, not in access to guns.” (Public Perspectives) When you watch the news, more often than not, the misuse of guns is demographically placed in areas of the country that is focused on something
Activists do a great job of portraying firearms as a very negative and frightening. There are many things that gun control activists fail to consider. Many times they do not think about how often a gun is used in self defense. Also of the total crime that is committed with a fire...
Over the past few decades gun control has come to the fore front of debate in politics and the mass media. It's no wonder that in the wake of the recent school shootings and attacks on churches that people are beginning to fear guns. People are beginning to see guns as an object of death and destruction and not as what they are meant to be. While guns are used in war they are not intended to kill innocent people, guns are intended to be used by experienced gun handlers for protection and hunting. When used properly a gun is no more dangerous than a car or a knife, all of these can be used in crime but none of them are intended to be.
In this excerpt Hawthorne is conveying a change in Hester’s physical appearance to now being austere and bland. Hawthorne’s description of the changed Hester is in close comparison to the description of the Puritans. After seven years of being punished and looked down upon, Hester Prynne -once described as a halo- is now fitting in with the sorrowful, bland colored, hair in a cap, rotund Puritan woman.
In Nathanial Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, the reader meets the character Hester Prynne who as the novel progresses, one notices the changes in her character are very dramatic. The changes are both physical and in her mannerism’s. There are many significant events which took place before the start of the novel and during the novel. Some of these events that lead to this dramatic change include the affect of wearing the scarlet letter, the secrets which she keeps, and her daughter Pearl’s evil characteristics. By these events, Hester Prynne’s image is transformed throughout the time of the story.
Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?
George Orwell’s Animal Farm, is a satirical novel that follows the causes, effects, and outcomes of a revolution. The Manor Farm is overtaken by the fatigued and dissatisfied animals that work tirelessly for Mr. Jones, the owner of the farm. The revolution is inspired by Major, the prize boar on the farm, but is attained by Snoball and Napoleon, two other boars. Squealer, a younger pig, acts as a persuasive communicator between the pigs and the other animals. The revolution is sparked by the desire to live on equal and just terms. The animals on the farm receive little to no education which affects their position in the revolution. The animals’ ignorance plays a major role in both political and social oppression because of their inability to

Yes, I strongly believe that college education should be free for everyone because Education is a basic necessity of our society these days. Free education wouldn’t just benefit one generation or one society but it can benefit the whole nation. If a nation is educated, then it can benefit the whole country and it can get better job opportunities for its citizens because in today’s world we can see highly paid jobs are knowledge based or require advanced technical skills. So in my opinion more educated nation would help remove all those flaws which are keeping country’s economy from growing rapidly. If the education is free in college then it can help a lot of those students who got good grades in their high schools but could not get into the college because of their financial situation. This way these kind of needy students who deserves to get a good degree and basically these students are future of America but they could not get it through
...his story, they always make fun of me for not firing. Most of them would have taken the shot, knowing full well that it might be a doe. They would not hesitate to break the law. However, what my family has taught me about getting what you want doesn’t mean you have to break the rules. Getting what you want and doing it right, is what is going to make you a better person because you are going to appreciate it much more. If I had taken the life of the wrong deer, I would have to live with the fact that I killed an innocent creature. I learned patience and how to control my emotions by forcing myself to make a proper judgment in a situation in which I could have lost my self-control. As I look back upon the incident now I can tell you that it was the single most important moment in my life as an outdoorsman. I grew as an individual, hunter and most importantly morally.
There are also many out of school programs that teach kids from kindergarten through sixth grade about gun safety. The Eddie Eagle program is one of the more common programs. This program is sponsored through the National Rifle Association. The class is taught that when the see a gun, they should stop, don’t touch, leave and get an adult. There are also other programs that teach kids to not be afraid of guns because when kids are afraid and nervous about something, mistakes tend to be made.
