Fredrick Douglas, formerly known as Fredrick Bailey, was born into slavery in 1818. He remained in slavery until he escaped in 1838 at the age of 20. After he became a free man, he was one of the biggest abolitionists of his time. However, before he was free he passed through the hands of many owners, masters, and slave abusers. It all started when he was born into the Colonel Edward Lloyd slave work force. Colonel Lloyd was a very rich man who owned more slaves than he could count, including Douglas and the majority of his family. Colonel Lloyd was not a fair man, he demanded much more than he should have even from his slaves and frequently punished them even when they did not deserve it. Captain Anthony was a clerk for Colonel Lloyd and did most of the daily dealings with Colonel Lloyds property and slaves. Thus he was Douglass’s first master. Captain Anthony, got his name from sailing up the Chesapeake Bay, and he was no stranger to the whip. He would frequently whip the slaves for no reason at all.
