The well-known composer, Franz Schubert, made many contributions in his lifetime to the world of music. His musical works took place from the very end of the Classical period and to the start of the Romantic period. He was an important composer that helped make this transition between periods. Among his compositions were over six-hundred vocal works, seven symphonies, religious music, opera, incidental music, chamber, and piano music. Overall, Schubert wrote over 1,500 works during his short life. Even though his life was cut relatively short, and he wasn’t very well known during his time, he still has a large influence on musicians and music today. While he gained much inspiration from composers Mozart and Beethoven, he had certain ways of writing music that made it his own style. He was also exceptional at adapting to different types of music. Schubert wrote for solo voice, opera, piano duets, solo piano, sonatas, bot secular and religious works, orchestral overtures, orchestral symphonies, concertante, chamber works, masses, an oratorio, a requiem, and some stage works. Schubert definitely enjoyed experimenting with different types of music. Many state that Schubert’s music emphasises more on melodic development than of harmonic. His style mirrored a combination of the period of classical music and the oncoming period of romantic music, with its long melodic lines. Franz Schubert was on the forefront of the romantic time period, so his music showed this transition. Sometimes he would write music based on poems, and the words of the poems would influence the tune. It is hard to say though, if Schubert fit more into the romantic or classical genres. His music was melodic and poetic, but it also had the formalness of classical music.
