For centuries, mankind has witness an element called fear. This element has not only weaken the souls of people, but also strengthen the confidence in others. Franklin D. Roosevelt proved this statement by saying “The only thing we have to fear,is fear itself.” This proverb can be exemplified through past and current events, people, and literature.Fear is witnessed throughout our lives, including our childhood. A good example is Franklin D. Roosevelt. Roosevelt grew up around wealth, but with that wealth there came consequences. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882 in Hyde Park, New York. He was the only child of both James and Sara Roosevelt. When he was three, a ship on which him and his parents were traveling on almost …show more content…
Roosevelt was not the only successful leader of his time as president, but another leader who underwent some frightening incidents himself, that man was Winston Churchill. All successful leaders had been in a frightening incident in their lives, and one of those leaders was winston Churchill. In 1899, Winston Churchill traveled to South Africa, to cover the Boer War. When he first arrived, he was greeted by enemy soldiers. The soldiers captured and prison Winston, but fortunately Churchill did eventually escaped through a bathroom window. This incident scared Winston as he thought that he may of never escape, but he pulled himself together and proceeded with his plan. At first the job he had taken was risky, but he was known for his toughness and with toughness came bravery. After Winston Churchill’s daring escape and serving his time at war in World War 1 , he soon became a leader of Great Britain for his braveness. Just like Franklin D. Roosevelt, Churchill urged his people of Great Britain to not be feared, for that he promises to defend his country. After the bombing on Great Britain by the Germans, Churchill declares war on Germany and eventually defeats them. At first the thought of entering another World War frightened thousands, but with Winston Churchill's boldness, he encouraged the people and successfully gained popularity. After World War 2 had ended he no longer feared anything. Unfortunately fear can sometimes be unexpected. On June 1953, Winston Churchill suffered a devastating stroke. The stroke left Churchill’s left hand paralyzed. This incident frightened and worried Churchill as he almost died that day. Without any warnings, incidents can occur to any unexpected victim. An incident such as Winston Churchill’s can happen without any signs and so Churchill was scared of not knowing what was happening to him. In conclusion, some of the most well known leaders we still know today, had some frightening encounters
Assuming the Presidency at the depth of the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt helped the American people regain faith in themselves. He brought hope as he promised prompt, vigorous action, and asserted in his Inaugural Address, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Despite an attack of poliomyelitis, which paralyzed his legs in 1921, he was a charismatic optimist whose confidence helped sustain the American people during the strains of economic crisis and world war.
He had a goal in his mind and he was going to do whatever it took to accomplish that goal. “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.” He was driven to save the British Isles from the hand of Hitler. His internal motivation to save his country is like a bulldog they may be stubborn and arrogant, but will stop at nothing to protect his family. He was key in getting the U.S. involved in World War II and securing aid from the U.S in the lend Lease Act which provided the good need to fight a war like gun, planes, and other supplies ammunition to Britain, Russia, and China. If Winston Churchill failed in this time period, Britain would have certainly fall, but the entire World was at risk of falling. Mr. Churchill was only madly driven; he was as tough as they
Fear motivates many people to act upon matters, right or wrong. This emotion has been important in many events in both works of literature, and in the real world. It has forced military geniuses into retreat, and influenced them to plan another method of attack. Fear can be both a positive and a negative acting force in one’s life, a quality that can motivate one to success as well as to downfall.
Leaders are criticized every day for the things they say or do, also for what they haven’t said or done. Courage is the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficult, dangerous, and painful situations without fear. It takes a special person to be a leader and Theodore Roosevelt was a person of courage he had thick skin in more ways than one. On October 12, 1912 Roosevelt was campaigning in Milwaukee, Wisconsin a man standing in the crowd aiming a gun to his head, pulled the trigger hitting Roosevelt in the right chest. At first he didn’t realize he had been shot until noticing a hole in his overcoat. He checked under his coat his fingers were covered in blood. Fortunately, the bullet struck his case for his glasses and the copy of his speech, he refused to go to the hospital until he was done giving an 80 minute speech. As he was finishing up told the crowd, “It takes more than one bullet to kill a Bull Moose”. Theodore Roosevelt stood the test of courage that day in
Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill (November 30 1874-January 24 1965) was a British politician and one of the 20th century’s most significant figures. He served as Britain’s Prime Minister twice from 1940-1945 and from 1951-1955. During his first service he lead Britain to victory, and Churchill (then 65 years old) was energized by the war. Churchill’s military experiences benefitted him in his role as Prime Minister. Three subtopics of this essay are: how did Churchill’s previous military experiences affect his decisions in WWII, how did Churchill’s strong leadership and oratory skills help him to achieve his political goals, and how did Churchill’s opinion on appeasement influence his decision on how to react to Hitler?
Winston Churchill was a British prime minister from 1940-1945. Churchill was a statesman, orator, and author, most importantly he was a great leader. Their task would prove to be of great importance, since Churchill refused to follow any orders unless typed and then signed by himself. However, more importantly, these people saw the man in some of his most private moments, that being the reason why Nel noticed one of Churchill’s most honorable traits, his
In the words of Bertrand Russell, “Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom” (Russell). Fear causes many problems in our lives. Fear influences many of a person’s actions and decisions. However, people usually regret the decisions or actions they made out of fear. Also, these actions and decisions can cause problems for those people in their future. Fear is a harmful emotion, for it clouds people’s judgement, disables them from taking action, and causes them to make decisions that they will regret later.
Another piece of Winston Churchill’s early life that greatly impacted the rest of his life was the great education that he got. Winston went to many great schools, academies etc. All of this lead into Winston Churchill’s great influence on the world and it’s course. Some of the things that Winston Churchill used to greatly influence the world’s course was spectacular, some of those being; Working in Parliament, writing books, the great speeches he gave while working which all will lead up to his impact in World War I. While discussing Winston Churchill’s triumphs and failures during this writing I will focus on his major impact on World War One.
But before he could achieve his overall goal he also had to encourage and strengthen his nation to prepare them for the war. He did this by making,” Great speeches before Parliament and over the radio, encouraging the English to have hope and remain determined against the Germans ( Winston Churchill, Research In Context).” With the help of his country and others, Winston Churchill reached his goals and fueled the fire behind stopping the Germans with his powerful speeches and strong
What had seemed to be a crushing defeat had actually became one of the shrewdest military maneuvers of the early years of the war. As the English breathed a sigh of relief, the citizens of England turned their weary eyes to Winston Churchill in order to see what would happen next. Churchill’s response to the citizens of England

Surprising to many, Winston Churchill might be one of the most charismatic leaders of all-time. Before this year he may not have been the best choice for this paper, but 2015 marks the 50-year anniversary of his death and the legacy of the Nobel Prize-winning wartime leader will be extensively celebrated. Not only have anniversaries fueled interest, but the increasingly public failings of contemporary politicians have also fueled interest. “There is this sense that he was a leader and a human being that we don’t see in politics anymore,” said Barry Singer, proprietor of Midtown Manhattan’s Chartwell Booksellers, which bills itself as the world’s only Winston Churchill bookshop. Churchill seemed to have a gift and is very much remembered in history for his leadership, “bulldog” spirit and effectiveness.
Winston Churchill was perhaps one of the greatest public speakers in history. Some of the best speeches have come from being in life or death situations, Winston was known best for this. His small sound clips like, “this was their finest hour”, and “this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning”, encourage his troops and his people that they will win this war and will overcome the greatest odds. Although Churchill told many speeches, his speech on June 18, 1940 showed the most emotion and courage of any other speech he told. In this speech he explained that the war in France is over and the war in Britain would begin. He said that if we fail then the world sink into an abyss. This emotion that he shows would give Britain hope, courage and most of all determination.
