In the 1920’s and 1930’s, America experienced many hardships, such as the Great Depression which is referred to by the U.S. Federal Reserves as “the longest and deepest depression of the 20th century”. Also occurring at this time was World War II, a war that affected the U.S. people at home, started by an attack on Pearl Harbor which resulted in 2,335 American workmen to be killed, it ended with two atomic bombs that will forever be remembered for its devastating power and historic meaning, all of this would have crippled a country, but America did not because of the extraordinary leadership of the 32nd president of the United States. During the 1920’s and 1930’s, America withstood many setbacks, nevertheless due to Franklin D. Roosevelt, a man of many words, not just made our country survive, but he helped mold our country into what it is today.
Born in early 1882, Roosevelt’s childhood was filled with many privileges; his family was very much into politics, many family members were wealthy. Among his privileges, was the opportunity to attend the best of schools; at school the head master always encouraged Roosevelt to help poor stricken people and to enter public service. The Roosevelt family was heavily Democratic and while attending Groton School in Massachusetts, Franklin Roosevelt was the only democrat in the class. He attended Harvard University, were Roosevelt earned his role as an “Average Student”. Theodore Roosevelt, the cousin of Franklin Roosevelt became President, while Franklin was attending Harvard, throughout the rest of Roosevelt’s life, Theodore Roosevelt was considered a role model and hero. Roosevelt also signed the Reorganization Act of 1939, which reorganized the government and gave the three branches of government its own specific role. Franklin D. Roosevelt was one of the few presidents who shaped our country; Roosevelt strived to make this country politically and socially diverse. Thanks to the principles Roosevelt laid out for America, many Americans can get a job regardless of where they come from, and old or disabled Americans can get benefits.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was no ordinary catalyst for change in the 1920’s and 1930’s, he was a warrior, unknown to many, Roosevelt made many key decisions and passed many laws that Americans take advantage of everyday, the 32nd President of America is a true American hero that should never be forgotten.

In the time period of 1920-1941 America experienced major global events that occurred in extremely short rapid intervals of time. From the end of World War I in 1918 to the Roaring Twenties, straight to the Great Depression in 1929, into the beginning of World War II in 1939, and all the way to the horror of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, America faced these occurrences with difficulty and confusion. The 1930’s were a time of poverty in America. The Great Depression hit the United States hard and it would take years to recover, but presidents like Franklin D. Roosevelt, although he did not solve everyone’s problem, would help a lot. Roosevelt brought America back from the brink and helped a lot of people, but so many others were left without jobs or money or food. 1930 to 1941 were difficult years for America and it was not until World War II that we started to make some progress.
Still, Roosevelt's historical reputation is deservedly high. In attacking the Great Depression he did much to develop a partial welfare state in the United States and to make the federal government an agent of social and economic reform. His administration indirectly encouraged the rise of organized labor and greatly invigorated the Democratic party. His foreign policies, while occasionally devious, were shrewd enough to sustain domestic unity and the allied coalition in World War II. Roosevelt was a president of stature.
Theodore Roosevelt JR. was born on October 27, 1858, in New York to Theodore Roosevelt SR. and Martha Bulloch Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt JR. was a very sick boy, he suffered from asthmatic attacks which caused the frightening sensation of drowning (Grondahl 2015 7-8). These sensations and attacks caused Theodore a lot of obstacles in his childhood. By attending Harvard College in 1875 when he was just seventeen years old, Theodore was able to push past all his setbacks from his childhood (Grondahl 2015 37). After high school, he applied to Harvard, and began his education there in 1876. It was there that he met Alice Lee, whom he later married. After graduating from Harvard, Roosevelt enrolled at the Columbia University Law School, but he dropped out. Instead he entered politics, which fascinated him. He believed as his father did, that men of wealth and intelligence should devote themselves to public service. At this time, New York politics were ran by corrupt party bosses. Therefore he was discouraged from entering by many of his friends and associates, by them saying “…the organizations were not controlled by ‘gentlemen’…the men I met would be rough and brutal and unpleasant to deal with…”

During the 1920’s, America was a prosperous nation going through the “Big Boom” and loving every second of it. However, this fortune didn’t last long, because with the 1930’s came a period of serious economic recession, a period called the Great Depression. By 1933, a quarter of the nation’s workers (about 40 million) were without jobs. The weekly income rate dropped from $24.76 per week in 1929 to $16.65 per week in 1933 (McElvaine, 8). After President Hoover failed to rectify the recession situation, Franklin D. Roosevelt began his term with the hopeful New Deal. In two installments, Roosevelt hoped to relieve short term suffering with the first, and redistribution of money amongst the poor with the second. Throughout these years of the depression, many Americans spoke their minds through pen and paper. Many criticized Hoover’s policies of the early Depression and praised the Roosevelts’ efforts. Each opinion about the causes and solutions of the Great Depression are based upon economic, racial and social standing in America.
In the book Theodore Roosevelt by Louis Auchincloss, I learned a great deal about the twenty-sixth President of the United States of America. Former President T. Roosevelt made many accomplishments as president, and did not have a high number of scandals. Our society has consisted of a great number of presidents who have changed the United States by helping our economy, but the one I feel who had the most influence was Franklin D. Roosevelt. F.D.R. was the 32nd president of the United States and remained in office for twelve years. He was born on January 30, 1882, at the family estate in Hyde Park, New York. His early education was by governesses and tutors, which caused him to have little contact with children his age. F.D.R. traveled frequently to Europe with his parents, lived in New York City during the winter months, and spent summers at their home on the Canadian Island of Campobello. At the age of 14, he attended a boarding school. Between 1900-1904, F.D.R. attended Harvard and attained a degree in business. While at Harvard, he fell in love with his 2nd cousin, Eleanor Roosevelt and got married in 1905. He then attended law school at Columbia, until he quit in the spring of 1907. The years berween 1929 and 1933 were trying years for people throughout the world. Inflation was often so high money became nearly worthless. America had lost the prosperity it had known during the 1920's. America was caught in a trap of a complete meltdown of economy, workers had no jobs simply because it cost too much to ship the abundance of goods being produced. This cycle was unbreakable, and produced what is nearly universally recognized as the greatest economic collapse of all times. Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858 in New York City, New York. He was always as hard worker but after his father died during his second year at Harvard, which only inspired him to work even harder and continue on to a law degree at Columbia University. He was soon married to Alice Hathaway Lee, a woman from Massachusetts, and began to enter the realm of politics. Roosevelt was rising as a young new political star until one day, February 14, 1884, his wife, Alice died of Bright’s disease, and his mother died of typhoid. This saddened Roosevelt greatly, he moved to the Dakota Territory for two years and becoming a rancher and cattle driver then returning to politics in a big way when he returned. Although he lost the race for the mayor of New York City, he soon started an elite group known as the Roughriders becoming a war hero in the battle of and becoming the Governor of New York. He soon remarried to Edith Carow in 1886, with which he had several children. Teddy was elected as President William McKinley’s Vice President and after McKinley’s re-election and assassination in 1901, Roosevelt became the youngest President in the nations history. On January 30th, 1882 in Hyde Park, New York a boy named Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born. He was son of James and Sara Roosevelt. From a young age his family had given him the education he needed to make for the next step in entering a private school called Groton, which was located in Massachusetts. It was then at Groton where he had listened to a speech by one of his distant cousins Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin had looked up to him and was very influential in his political career. At Groton Franklin was not a standout student nor was he an athlete. Although that did not stop him from attending Harvard University in 1900.
President Roosevelt brought the executive branch of the government into power like never before. He is hated to this day by many people. But for the majority of the country during one of our toughest times, he was what we needed. Without consulting history acknowledging that, it’s impossible to judge what he did very negatively. The old ways weren’t working, and while President Hoover tried to do something, it wasn’t enough. President Roosevelt was more successful with the actions he took for relief during the Great Depression.
