Francisco Indalecio Madero was born on October 30, 1873 in Parras, Coahuila to one of the wealthiest families in Mexico. Madero attended Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland between 1886 -1888. He also studied for several years at a business school in Paris and even spent one semester studying at one of the most prestigious Universities in California, UC Berkley. He was influenced by Mexican revolutionary, Benito Juárez, who Madero understood as a “hero of democracy”. Madero was a revolutionary hero who successfully overthrew Mexican dictator, Porfirio Díaz as well as set democracy in the minds of those oppressed. Porfirio Díaz had been in power since 1876 and by the early 1900’s he faced numerous problems. In an attempt to win back the people he told American journalist, James Creelman, that he intended to retire as well as promised a free election in 1910. Madero began to write a book called La Sucesión Presidencial en 1910 where he voiced his beliefs and ideals in attempts to redirect Mexico to the path of democracy. In the state of Morelos Emiliano Zapata, led a peasant army who victoriously killed federal forces in the town of Cuautla. In Chihuahua, Pancho Villa and Pascual Orozco allied with Madero winning him many victories against federal forces. The Díaz regime finally renounced power on May 1911 after the fall of Ciudad Juárez. On November 1911, Madero became the first president in Mexico in over 30 years. Madero’s presidency was short due to his naïve nature and political inexperience; he failed to recognize the malignant agenda of his supporters and those who sided with the previous regime. Madero called for retirement of Diaz in carefully chosen words, “General Diaz knows perfectly well that his retirement from the presidency would be a benefit to the country…that leaving it free to form a new government in accordance with its aspiration and its needs” (21).
Lope de Aguirre, better known as the Prince of Freedom, was a Spanish soldier who partook in not only the Spanish conquest and exploration of South America, but later on led the rebellion against Spanish rule in parts of the continent. Aguirre is not only known for his extreme acts of brutality against Spanish leaders, but for being one of the first to claim himself as an American. He played a key role in the fight for independence against the Spanish monarchy. His great acts of violence against Spanish leaders placed him in control of the Island of Margarita (Venezuela), Panama, Chile, and Peru. His betrayal to the Spanish crown was frowned upon and he was soon thought of as a symbol of cruelty and treachery in Colonial Spanish America. Lope de Aguirre payed the ultimate price for his acts of cruelty and violence and was captured and killed by the Spaniards in 1561.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! Dead falls Romaldo Cortez, Brother of Gregorio Cortez, thanks to Sheriff Morris. The day is June 12th of 1901 and Sheriff Morris shows up to Gregorio Cortez’s home. Sheriff Morris along side with Boone Choate (who was supposed to be an expert in the Mexican language) were both in search of a horse thief, start asking questions immediately when they see Gregorio Cortez and Romaldo Cortez. Choate asked Cortez “, did you trade a house with Andres Villarreal?” Cortez answered solidly “No”. Cortez had traded a mare not a horse. As soon as Sheriff Morris heard his response, he told Choate to tell Cortez and his brother that they were going to be arrested. Gregorio asked why but Sheriff Morris misunderstood and shot Romaldo to death. In defense, Cortez shot Sherriff Morris for his brother. Cortez knew that he was going to get into trouble so he decided to flee. (Garcia) Many question if he’s a hero for defending his brother the way he defended him. Many think he is just a rebel for killing a sheriff for no good reason, but Cortez had a reason. Cortez is a hero for the reason that he was brave enough to confront injustices from defending his brother, never giving up, and persisted as long as he could, demonstrating that he had the courage most individuals do not.

The Porfirio Diaz first had good intentions for Mexico. He at first bettered Mexico exponentially in his first few years. His main goal for the government was to be more industrial. He thought that agriculture didn’t matter as much as industry. The only problem was that most of the people living in Mexico depended on the agriculture. Diaz was well aware of the problem and ignored the people’s needs. Eventually his popularity started to drop. People where then looking for anyway to take him out of office. Once he realized that his presidency was being threatened; he did everything in his power to ensure he won. That is; until “People started noticing that he was rigging elections” (Source b2).
Porfirio’s role in the revolution was to maintain dictatorial rule over Mexico after becoming president and to defeat Madero along with his forces, including Villa and Orozco. He resigned after his troops were defeated at the Battle of Juárez in 1911 and went to Europe.
Following the assassination of Madero and the assumption of power by Huerta in 1913, he returned to join the opposition under the revolutionary Venustiano Carranza. Using "hit and run" tactics, he gained control of northern Mexico, including Mexico City. As a result, his powerful fighting force became "La Division Del Norte." The two men soon became enemies, however, and when Carranza seized power in 1914, Villa led the rebellion against him.
In 1910, Francisco Madero, a son of wealthy plantation owners, instigated a revolution against the government of president Díaz. Even though most of his motives were political (institute effective suffrage and disallow reelections of presidents), Madero's revolutionary plan included provisions for returning seized lands to peasant farmers. New political parties emerged to represent broader segments of the population. Democracy, always a fragile plant anywhere, seemed ready to blossom throughout Latin America. Nowhere was this change more amply illustrated than in Guatemala, where Jorge Ubico ruled as dictator from 1931 until 1944.
This documentary called “The Storm that Swept Mexico”, talks about one of the most important events in Mexican history which was the Mexican revolution which started on 1910 and lasted for about 10 years. At first this video starts talking about how Mexico lost a major part of their land in Mexican American war. The states that Mexico lost were Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, and California in 1848, by president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Moreover, another war mentioned was the one Mexico had against France called “Battle of Puebla”. After this atrocious war Mexico had 20 years of peace until the Mexican revolution in 1910 took place. This very interesting video dragged my attention due to the fact that it explains precisely every important figure that was involved in such a big movement. Furthermore, in this fascinating video I learned a lot of interesting facts about Porfirio Diaz. There was a huge revolution in the country of Mexico that started in the year 1910, led by Porfirio Diaz, the president of Mexico in 1910. In the 1860’s Diaz was important to Mexican politics and then was elected president in 1877. Diaz said that he would only be president for one year and then would resign, but after four years he was re-elected as the President of Mexico. Porfirio Diaz and the Mexican revolution had a huge impact on the country of Mexico that is still felt in some places today.
The Mexican Revolution began November 20th, 1910. It is disputable that it extended up to two decades and seized more than 900,000 lives. This revolution, however, also ended dictatorship in Mexico and restored the rights of farm workers, or peons, and its citizens. Revolutions are often started because a large group of individuals want to see a change. These beings decided to be the change that they wanted to see and risked many things, including their lives. Francisco “Pancho” Villa and Emiliano Zapata are the main revolutionaries remembered. These figures of the revolution took on the responsibility that came with the title. Their main goal was to regain the rights the people deserved. The peons believed that they deserved the land that they labored on. These workers rose up in a vehement conflict against those opposing and oppressing them. The United States was also significantly affected by this war because anybody who did not want to fight left the country and migrated north. While the end of the revolution may be considered to be in the year of 1917 with the draft of a new constitution, the fighting did not culminate until the 1930’s.

In 1812 Mexico is politically unstable. In 1846 Mexico loses one third of its territory to the United States during the Mexican War. In 1861 Benito Juarez becomes the president of Mexico. In 1877 Porfrio Diaz rules Mexico. In 1911 Diaz flees the country and Madero is elected president. In 1914 General Uenustians Carranja becomes the president of Mexico. In 1934 President Lazaro Cardinas nationalizes the industry of Mexico. In 1985 there was an earthquake in Mexico City and it kills 20,000 people. Last, in 1988 Carlos Salinas de Goortari is elected president of Mexico.
The history of political instability in Mexico and its need for revolution is very complex and dates back to the colonization of Mexico by the Spaniards in the 1500s.
