Francis Drake Francis Drake was born between 1540 and 1544 in a town in England called Tavistock, Devon. He was born to Edmund Drake and Mary Mylwaye Drake. Although, Francis Drake was brought up in Plymouth by the Hawkins family, relatives who worked as merchants and privateers. At the age of 18, he went to sea for the first time with the Hawkins family, and by the 1560s had earned command of his own ship called The Judith. Afterwards, he made many voyages to participate in profitable trade including illegal slave trade. These expeditions granted him fame and fortune. In 1577, Drake was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth I to set off on an expedition against the Spanish along the Pacific coast of the Americas. He set sail with five small ships He stopped in the Philippines and bought spices in the Molucca Islands. He continued on around the Cape of Good Hope back to England, landing at Plymouth in 1580. He arrived with a cargo of spices and Spanish treasure. He became a hero in England and was later knighted by Queen Elizabeth aboard the Golden Hind. During his travels, Francis Drake used navigation tools such as the cross-staff, astrolabe, mariner’s compass, log line, hourglass, traverse board, and the sounding lead. The astrolabe and cross-staff were used to find the latitude of the ship. Direction and speed of the ship were measured with a compass, traverse board, and logline. These tools were used together to help him through his voyages. Drake’s voyage help expand people’s geographic knowledge. He discovered and claimed California and surrounding land. He also discovered that Tierra del Fuego (the land south of the Magellan Strait) was not part of a southern continent, but a group of islands. In addition, he raided the Spaniards and killed many of them. This helped spark the Spanish war. He also participated in illegal slave trade. Regardless, he was seen as a hero by many. By sailing around the world, he was able to gain riches and take them back to England which helped make them rich. He also inspired others to follow his footsteps and set
