Fox Island is a 605-acre park that is in southwest Allen County. The park’s address is 7324 Yohne Road. Fox Island is twelve minutes from the Fort Wayne International Airport, eight minutes from Lutheran Hospital and nineteen minutes from downtown Fort Wayne. The park’s neighbors include Interstate 69, National Serv-All’s landfill and Eagle Marsh Preserve. Fox Island is a park within a park that has 270 acres dedicated as a State Nature Preserve. This area protects unique plants, animals and geographic features. Fox Island has seven miles of trails throughout the preserve. These paths allow visitors to enjoy the beauty and splendor of the park. Fox Island also has over six miles of cross-country skiing trails in the winter and is available when more than four inches of snow are on the ground. Programs in the Nature Center are available for fun or as home study credit.
Fox Island State Nature Preserve contains marshes and swamps that border a wooded dune. The dune is a result of the decline of the Wisconsin glacier. The preserve is home to over 190 species of birds. The diverse land and water forms create an assortment of plant societies, which support animals. Black oak, white oak, black walnut, wild black cherry, willows, cottonwood, and sycamore trees all provide shade in the preserve. In the northwestern part of the preserve, wetlands contain open water encircled by vegetation. The preserve also contains old fields in a number of stages of succession.
The nature center is a charming log cabin and contains a conference room as well as large and small-sized classrooms. All of the rooms in the nature center are available for rent. A gift shop, Allen County Parks Administrative offices, education offices, and an ass...

Isle Royal is located fifty-six miles north of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. It is the largest wilderness area in Michigan (USNPS, 2014). The island is surrounded by Lake Superior, which creates a cooler temperature. This results in arctic plant species growth on the island. There are only eighteen mammal species present on the island because most mammals cannot make the trip across the frozen great lake (USNPS, 2014). The need for an ice bridge is not the only environmental factor that is stopping the migration of animals; there is also the severe cold, and also wind and fog (Vucetich, 2012). Some species such as caribou and coyote have found the island to be too intense and have gone extinct (Vucetich, 2012). Due to the harsh weather and isolation of the island, humans have never regularly lived on the island (Vucetich, 2012). Some of species that are present such as the red squirrel are becoming their own subspecies due to its separation from the mainland (USNPS, 2014). The isolation of Isle Royal is what makes it a great place to conduct research, it has very low human interaction and the species that are on the island will have been and continue to be isolated from the mainland.

The area surrounding the Cuyahoga River is notorious for being extremely polluted and industrialized. An exception to this is Cuyahoga Valley National Park. This area has a rich history and has been used as a source of livelihood, industrialization, and recreation for centuries. This rural oasis takes up nearly thirty two square miles in northeastern Ohio and is the only National Park in the state. It became recognized as an official National Park in 2000 and before was known as the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area. Cuyahoga Valley National Park preserves a rural landscape along the Cuyahoga River and serves as a contrast to the otherwise metropolitan setting.
When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, America was at last forced to officially enter World War II. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt officially declared war on the Japanese and in his famous radio address to the American people, he professed that December 7 was a day that would live in infamy. Americans and Japanese alike, still remember Pearl Harbor Day, but how many remember the gallant, fighting Marines who served on a tiny atoll in the Pacific by the name of Wake Island?

Santa Catalina Island, often known as Catalina Island, is located off the coast of Southern California, southwest of Los Angeles. Catalina Island forms part of the Channel Islands archipelago. Catalina is the only island, out of eight, that has been significantly developed. There are two major settlement location within the island - the city of Avalon and the unincorporated town of Two Harbors (“Visit Catalina Island,” 2014). Beyond the town boundaries the island is covered by wild life that it is owned and operated by the Catalina Island Conservancy ("The Official Catalina Island Website,” 2013).

It was late in the afternoon when my family and I arrived at our summer vacation destination, Garner State Park. Garner is one of the best and well known places in Texas to go overnight camping, hiking, and swimming. The main attraction of the park is the Frio River which flows through one side of the entire park. While on the other side, it is nothing but the wilderness. However, having no protection from their primary predator, man, by the 1970’s there numbers had dwindled to less than thirty thousand. In 1971, after a massive public uproar, Congress by a unanimous vote enacted the “Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act” (Act) that characterizes wild horses and burros as national treasures and provides for their protection.
