There are four ideas for the explanation of poverty. One of the first explanations is to blame the individual. Due to the decisions an individual has made, they have driven themselves into impoverishment. In addition to this, the idea argues individuals who are poor are that way because of their poor personal characteristics. People are responsible for themselves being poor because there are plenty of resources out there for the individual to survive. This includes minimum wage, access to public education and public resources, and assisting programs for the impoverished such as welfare. This explanation deals with the ranking of people within a hierarchy based off their gender, race, income, social status, etc. This sort of intertwines with everything in the way that it discusses financial gaps between people based off not only their capabilities as human beings to provide for themselves, but also their disadvantages in regions where gender or race are looked at as unequal and even people’s social associations with one another. Discrimination is a major factor in this idea. Social stratification also implements the idea of culture in relation to poverty. This is perhaps one of the most prominent causes of poverty in my eyes. Individual absorb the culture around them at a young age. This will affect how they behave in society. If a child is born into the projects living off a one parent minimum wage income, and they are surrounded by the temptations of drugs, the hardships of gang violence, and unlawful other individuals, they world view will be different from those of others; moreover, this isn’t a rare or unrealistic scenario. Underdeveloped citys/towns are fairly common nationwide. Locally, Lawrence is a perfect example of this with a poverty level 29.2 percent below the poverty threshold. With no money circulating throughout the city, no substantial businesses to bring money into the city, and abandoned business lots everywhere, it is almost as if this city is stuck. Living within an impoverished society, one consumes the culture of the society and becomes stuck too. In addition to this, racial discrimination, while diminished, still exists.
