George Washington was the father of the United States of America. He created our country from the beginning. Not only was he a great leader, but he was also a great commander. He helped us win the Revolutionary War, which gave our country independence. We finally became free, and that’s the greatest thing in America. The fact that he motivated regular people to fight a huge army is amazing. In 1732, George Washington was born on his father's plantation in Westmoreland County, Virginia. His father, Augustine, was a leading planter in the area and also served as a justice of the county court. His father’s first wife died in 1729, leaving him with Augustine Jr., Lawrence, and Jane. George’s father died when he was eleven, leaving most of the property to his two half brothers. There is not much known of George Washington’s education, but it is known that he did not attend college. Most of the children in Virginia were taught at local private schools or by tutors. Boys began school at around the age of seven, learning reading, writing, and basic arithmetic. He married Martha Dandridge Custis in 1759. George Washington wanted to join the navy, but his mother would not allow him. Instead, he joined with George William Fairfax as a surveyor to the unexplored wild of the Virginia frontier. George read many books to learn about geometry and the basic principles of surveying. At only seventeen years old, he became a formidable surveyor, with good income. He worked very hard, and purchased new lands. Not only a hard working individual, but George Washington was also a great commander. He was the commander of the Continental Army. His had experience in only frontier warfare, involving small numbers of soldiers. He had no experience ma... ... middle of paper ... ...s. From surveyor, to war commander, to U.S. president, George Washington never turned his back on our country.
