There has been significant high rate of child neglect and abuse in the foster care system in Canada. A child being placed in protections services creates higher risks of abuse and neglect, rather than providing a safe environment for a child (Marquis et al., 2008). There has been an estimation of 76,183 children placed in the foster care systems in Canada and rates keep increasing immensely (Marquis et al., 2008). Children are taken always from their families who are unable to provide proper care creating changes in a child’s life. Once a child is placed in the foster care system they often feel discourage and disappointment, since many relationships are dysfunctional and abusive (Marquis et al., 2008). “Abused children tend to experience behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and psychological problems that can continue into adulthood (as cited in Wolfe, 1999, p. 8). Children who are exposed to abuse at a younger age were more likely to have caretakers diagnosed with substance abuse disorder and high rates of abusive spousal relationships, which leads to further violence in a child’s life (Marquis et al., 2008). The Children who are affected by this are abused victims rather than maltreated victims. These issues also create abusive symptoms within a child such as, increase in anger and aggression, becoming verbally abusive, being easily triggered or stress, and noncompliant making it harder for an individual to create healthy relationships with others (Marquis et al., 2008). Moreover, another issue children of the foster care system have is keeping stable placements. In some cases a Childs behaviours and attitude reflects past experiences causing hardships in homes (Marquis et al., 2008). In other intense Caretakers are seeing the struggle of children and often don’t want to carry their problems (Marquis et al., 2008). It is difficult for a good caretaker to create a healthy relationship with a child when they have undergone so much in their own homes and in others (Marquis et al., 2008). Also caretakers become aware of their behaviour and don’t want to take them in. also good caretakers don’t want to carry or put further struggle in a Childs life (Marquis et al., 2008). However, caregivers who reject a child who has undergone abuse often leads to the process of child maltreatment and neglecting. When a child is placed from home to home a further issue is created and it becomes more difficult for a good caretaker to take a child in.
