Equal rights have been an issue in American society since the day it was founded and it is still a problem today. While women are earning lower wages than men in the same occupation, many African-Americans are unemployed and are also discriminated against. Both inferior to the white man, the fight for equal rights was no easy task, for it took plenty of demonstrations, support, and convincing to begin to cease segregation and oppression. Well-known leaders helped the causes beginning with desegregation and suffrage afterwards. Although women and African-Americans fought for the same rights, they did so in a different manner.
Lets begin with the differences that women went through to achieve equal rights as opposed to African Americans. Seems that women were able to achieve this much easier than African Americans because they did peaceful marches and protests and demonstrations to get to their goal. They hosted conventions with the support of many African Americans.
Women’s suffrage would not have been possible if it weren’t for the African American movement. Considering half the black community were also women, it was necessary for African Americans to obtain civil rights before women. The reason for this was because in order to get the full support for the women’s movement, it required all females in that time to be heard; therefore, African-American women needed to overcome the race issue to ultimately help the cause for women in general. Also, many black men supported the rights for women of their own race, which helped the whole women’s rights movement. The fight for equal rights for African-Americans and women is still occurring in today’s society. Regardless of all the progress they have both made, there are still injustices that they need to overcome. The struggle in the workplace would not be an easy task because it is not as drastic as those issues in the past; however, equality will be achieved through time and effort from both sides, only if they are willing to unite again and fully accomplish the goals they once set forth.
Even though African Americans were now free and considered citizens thanks to the 13th and 14th amendments, they were still severely oppressed. While technically they had more rights and opportunities in the United Sates government than females, they did not truly receive them. As Frederick Douglass said over and over again in support of the 15th amendment, the abolishment of slavery did not eradicate racism. It was still a huge problem in America. Abolishment had been achieved in name and name only, because they were economically just as tyrannized as before. In the eyes of the feminists who supported the 15th amendment, they saw it as an opportunity for African American males to be able to make a bigger influence in American politics and hopefully lessen the iron fist they were under. Anthony held a major responsibility in women suffrage through her early life, working with the National Woman Suffrage Association, and her role after her death.
For many years people fought and struggled for change to make the world a better place. People struggle for change to feel equal by actively fighting for human rights, they urge people to abide by the rule of law to accomplish these equal rights, and they fight for a change in the future to ensure that the work they have done is not destroyed by the younger generations. Thanks to the hard work of our ancestors, the freedom that we are granted benefits many people around the world today. If it were not for their struggle we would not have some of the privileges we have today, such as the right to vote. Alice Paul and Ida B. Wells are both exemplary examples of advocates for the women’s suffrage. They marched and protested for the right to vote which eventually led to the 19th amendment. It took a very strong leader to accomplish this goal, a person that believed in the rule of law and a change for the future. After many years of battling for equality among the sexes, people today have no idea of the trails that women went through so that women of future generations could have the same privileges and treatment as men. Several generations have come since the women’s rights movement and the women of these generations have different opportunities in family life, religion, government, employment, and education that women fought for. In 1964, Linda Brown along with the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) challenged the Separate but Equal doctrine, and won (Askew). Discriminatory laws that lasted for 99 years, starting with the Black Codes, moving to the Louisiana Separate Car Act and Plessy v. Ferguson, to everyday laws, finally became overturned. They permanently hindered a large group of people as seen by literacy rates, household income, and household ownership, but those numbers became more equal as time went on. Unfortunately, due to humanities extreme ignorance, we don’t see these issues recurring today. People discriminate against homosexuals, for example, and they don’t get equal rights. People must look to the past and use the knowledge of their mistakes to never make those same mistakes again.
The reality of wage differences between men and women is that above all changes women continue to earn less than men. Countless arguments have promoted that wage inequality has changed and that everyone finally receives an equal amount of pay. “For women of color, the gap is largest of all: In 2006, black and Hispanic women earned 86 and 87 cents on the white man’s dollar, respectively,” (Mcswane 2). If a woman is lucky enough she will get an equal pay compared to a man doing the same job. But it is challenging for a woman of a minority background to achieve this. Not only are women paid less because of their sex, but also because of their race. There seems to be a mentality that because someone is a woman and a minority that they cannot do the same job as men or that women do not have the same education as the men, so employers do not have to pay them the same. “When the numbers are broken down by district, they 're pretty hard to ignore. Women have been deprived from having the same ability as males politically and socially. The injustice in social and political power in females has been a subject that’s been debated and protested for many years. Black Feminism developed after the civil war which was around the late 1800’s and 1900’s. There were many of black women who contributed to black feminism and paved the way for black women. Ida B. Wells was one of the black feminist that paved the way for black people socially and politically but she also participated in the developing a movement that empowers black females. Ida B. Wells was a journalist who spoke on the injustice of women as well as the civil rights movement. Mary McLeod Bethune was a black feminist who was an educator, she had a leadership within the civil rights movement and was the founder of Bethune-Cookman University. Bethune also, opened up another school that educated black girls only the school provide the girls education and well as thought the girls about their rights and standing up for what’s right and to hopefully one day be future black feminist. The idea of equality has been around since the Puritans first came over to the New World. However, their idea of equality was that man is equal to man, not man is equal to woman. Since the age of the Puritans, women’s rights have improved immensely. Through women’s rights movements, American literature and the push of feminism throughout the United States, women are much more equal to men than they were in the early years of American history.
Equality has been one of the more problematic throughout the years. For example, when people owned slaves and before men and women were made equal there was no sense of equality through all people. Recently there has been a battle for more equality towards African-Americans. They believe that they are not being treated the same as white people, so they have been standing up for what they think is right. African-Americans feel as though white people are treated better than they are and want things to be equal between the both of them. This has been a very long issue, going back all the way to when people still owned slaves, so there has never been that sense
Despite the manifestation of Rosie the Riveter propaganda and the continuous push to recruit women, they still were not granted equal pay for their services. This was true in the 1940’s and it’s still a relevant issue today. Then, it was rare for women to earn even slightly more than fifty cents to every man’s dollar. Now, the average woman earns anywhere from sixty to eighty percent of a man’s salary for the exact same job. Ranges vary depending on the specific career field. However, women of minorities remain stuck in injustice systematic trends. The pay rate for a female minority is still approximately fifty percent.
The thought of women having equal rights has caused major controversy throughout American History. Women have fought for their rights for many years, wanting to be more than a wife or a maid. We can see that African Americans were still struggling for equality even after the emancipation and the abolishment of slavery. They still did not get the equal rights and opportunities compared to whites. This had been reflected in the first essay in Du Bois’s book with a title Of Our Spiritual Strivings that indicates blacks were denied the opportunity that were available to the whites even after emancipation. During the days of Jim Crow, people of color received unfair treatment from almost all aspects of their lives. A Cultural Revolution swept through the United States during the 1960s and 1970s. This revolution brought about change and affected nearly everyone—whether they supported the Cultural Revolution or opposed it. This time period in United States history consisted of radical movements and vicissitudes as cultural revolutionaries struggled for equality of all people of both genders and all races. When people think of this period, the civil rights movement and the fight for desegregation in America comes to mind. Although the struggle for racial equality is an important and unforgettable part of American history, there was another fight against inequality that many people overlook. One problem that Americans are facing is the inequality between men and women, whether it is in everyday life or in a professional atmosphere. One step that has been taken toward equality was introduced with the Equal Pay Act of 1963, signed by President John F. Kennedy. This law was the first affecting the amount of job opportunities available for women and allowing them to work in traditionally male dominated fields. On the outside, this would sound like a solution where nothing could possibly go wrong, but it is not.
Discrimination at work is a touchy issue. Most people, if not all, have experienced some sort or form of it and they ignored it, quit, or got fired from their job. Women tend to be more emotional than men and when women are judged and discriminated they are offended by it immediately. Also, the fact of women getting a lower income than men for the same job is almost unbelievable. It is very important to be concerned on the issue because it is constantly increasing throughout the United States. It upsets me that women are paid less than men because women have the same ability and work ethic as men do, but they are looked at differently. According to AAUW, women are making 77 percent of what men make. This rate hasn’t changed since 2002 (Hill, 2013). Statistics show that women will never make as much as men due to the thought of never being comparable to men (Williams, 2013).
