Football’s Offensive Schemes In college football, there are many distinct offensive schemes and play books. From Oregon's spread offense to Alabama's pro style offense to even Army's unique triple option offense. There are many different types of offensive schemes in college football, all with unique characteristics and traits. They all have individuality in their offense that helps them reach their goal, winning.
First things first is to identify what an offensive scheme is. An offensive scheme is the basic set of formations, routes, and protections on any given play. A pro style offense is a lot harder to learn and that's why it is harder to implement Into college football. A pro style offense consists of a more compact formation with more lineman using fewer splits and more running lanes. It is also more likely that the quarterback will be under center than in the shotgun formation. They are balanced, requiring offensive lines that are efficient at both pass and run blocking, quarterbacks with good pocket presence, and running backs who are capable of running between the tackles and guards. Tight ends are very important to a pro style offense because they can be used as either a pass or one blocker, and even a receiver. Even though the pro style offense is most prevalent in the National Football League some college coaches have mastered it. The West Coast offense was popularized by Coach Bill Walsh and the San Francisco 49ers in the 1980s Walsh formulated what became known as the West Coast offense Weiland assistant coach for the bangles and eventually implemented it into his system when he became the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.Bill Walsh went on to win three Super Bowls running the West Coast offense behind the passing abilities of Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana. Bill Walsh's West Coast Offense has a main goal of trying to open up running and passing lanes for tailbacks and receivers , by forcing the defense to concentrate on short passing plays. Since most plays run from deep behind the line of scrimmage situations can be attacked with both either a pass or a run, the purpose is to make the plays the coach calls unpredictable and keep the defense off balance, forcing players on defence to be prepared for a multitude of possible offensive plays rather than focusing on one specific type of play.
