Food Insecurity is a bigger problem than people realize
There are 41.2 million people that live in food insecure homes, 6.5 million of which are children and young adults. There is a common misconception about food insecurity; most think that it falls under the category of being homeless, but it does not. Food insecurity is the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable and nutritious food. Meaning that depending on their financial status they may look normal, but struggle everyday to find a nutritious meal everyday. High food security is having no indications of food access problems and limitations, meaning that you always know where your next meal is coming from. An example would be if you eat a nutritious meal every day and can always eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Marginal food security one or two reported indication including shortage of food in the classroom. This means there was an incident where you had limited amount of food but never none. An example would include worrying if you will have enough food, with no change of your diet. Low food insecurity is reports of reduced quality foods little or no indication of reduced food intake. This means that you don’t have a nutritious meal to eat everyday also not eating what you want to eat so a slight change in your diet. Very low food insecurity reports of a multiple indications of disrupted eating patterns and reduced food intake. This means that you not only are eating reduced quality foods but you don’t know where your next meal is coming from. Food insecurity has many factors and many different
