Can people really change for the better? In the story Flipped, by Wendelin Van Draanen, one of the main characters, Bryce Loski does change for the better. When Bryce’s family decides to move across the street from Juli’s family, he starts to dislike her because he thinks she is annoying. Juli tries to be nice to Bryce in every possible way yet, Bryce thinks the just the opposite and hides from her. After living next to Juli for a few years, and facing some challenges together, he starts to understand that Juli is actually a great person deep down and eventually falls in love with her. Bryce is a dynamic character who changes from a kid who is afraid to express how he feels about something, to a person who is not afraid to show how he feels inside. …show more content…

When Juli’s favorite tree is going to get cut down, she decides to stay there and want others to help her. Unfortunately, no one wants to help her, even Bryce Loski. When Bryce struggles to decide which is right he says, “For a second I considered it. But then the bus arrived and I talked myself out of it. It wasn’t my tree, and even though she acted like it was, it wasn’t Juli’s either.” (pg.25). Wendelin puts the words “I talked myself out of it” in the sentence to show that he’s scared to help Juli stand up for the tree. The author includes the tree scene to show that Bryce is not eager to help
