Oedipus’s Tragic Flaw
Since the beginning of the play, it is safe to infer that Oedipus Rex has temper issues. Although he didn’t know who the man was at the time, Oedipus killed his father simply because of an insult. Even if we credit this decision to his lack of knowledge about his past, he is still responsible for his actions. It was his anger that clouded his vision and made him make hasty decisions; thus, it is safe to say that Oedipus’s only tragic flaw was his temper.
There are those that will use the fact that the Oracle’s prophecy was unconditional to argue that Oedipus’s story was a tragedy of fate. While it is in fact true that the Oracle didn’t say any “ifs or buts” in his prophecy, the reader has to understand that things don’t
