What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear of Flappers: The slicked back hair, the bright red lipstick, the long colorful boas or the freedom and rights that they opened up for women many decades later? Before flappers, a woman wore their hair very long, and skirts to either their ankle or longer with high collared shirts; their name, were the Gibson girls, (Rosenburg). They were the generation before the flapper. Modest but yet still broke barriers and rules for ladies of that time. Once the 1920’s came into play, so did the height of skirts. In just the time period of two years, women’s skirts rose from just a few inches above the ankle to right to the top of the knee (Rosenburg). Flappers were young, single, middle-class women, and most held steady jobs in retail. They were an essential part to customer relations and service (U.S. History). Flappers of the 1920’s began the era of women’s rights and freedoms.
