Fixed Mindset

As Carol Dweck states in her article, “Mindsets: The New Psychology of Success,” people often have different mindsets which are, “beliefs about yourself and you're most basic qualities” (Dweck, 1). There are two very different mindsets. One of which, is when people believe that they already have the perfect amount of traits and abilities to succeed every task. This is called a fixed mindset. The problem with a fixed mindset is that people believe they are not able to change the way they think because the traits they conceal are given. The other type of mindset is a growth mindset. People with growth mindsets are able to view their abilities, traits, and take them into consideration when dealing with any issue. As long as they continue to work hard and dedicate themselves to the task at hand they are able to accomplish their goals. These types of people know that practice makes perfect. Personally, I believe that I have a growth mindset when it comes to athletics but a fixed mindset when dealing with academics; but more specifically english. I have continued to dedicate myself to sports by practicing with friends, adults, and even professional athletes. With sports I am able to easily learn new skills which I can then apply to game time situations. Although I have a fixed mindset in academics I believe I can change that to help myself improve as a student and a better samaritan. Having a fixed mindset can damage my ability to think clearly and solve problems in school work. When I am faced with a challenge or assignment I tend to do the bare minimum because that is all I know how to do. Just like the essay example I didn’t push myself to be a better student or go the extra mile to create a better research paper. I stuck with what I knew and what I felt like was the better
