There are five themes of geography which include location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and region. The country that I was given to describe the five themes is the United Kingdom also known as the UK. I have never been to this area and will use information from the internet to inform the reader about this beautiful country. Many websites were used in finding research for this paper.
The first theme is location. The United Kingdom is located in the western, eastern and northern hemispheres. It is on the coastline of the continent of Europe. It is the largest island in Europe. Human-environment interaction is when humans have impact on every area of the earth, as well as when humans have a local impact on their environment; movement is when humans are interacting on the earth. Human-environment interaction is changed based on how humans adapt to the environment with positive and negative effects. People depend on their environment by relying on the lakes and rivers for drinking water and for cleaning and cooking. The rivers and lakes are also used for fishing and to feed their families. They also use the stones from the land to build as well as the trees for building structures such as homes and other businesses. The people of the United Kingdom have modified their environment by enlarging their cities much like the cities in the United States. Instead of being a country with mainly large open field, it has turned into more urban areas. Deforestation had also happened in order to create more cities and areas to build houses and businesses and factories. There are areas in the United Kingdom that are still farm land. In the northwestern part of the U.K. farmers have sheep mainly because sheep can survive in the winters. While in the southeastern part of England and the lowlands of Scotland you find grain, sugar beets, and potatoes in many fields. Region is usually an area of land that has common features. A region can also be defined as natural or artificial features; also language, government, and religion can often define a region; so can wildlife, forests, and climate. The region of square miles in the U.K. is “90,058 square miles which is 243,610 square kilometers”. The coastline is 7,723 miles. The population of the United Kingdom is 62,698,362 people estimated in 2011. Also the U.K. is made up of a variety of regions. There are 4 and include England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. England is the biggest one out of the four covering most of the United Kingdom. “Bordering it is Scotland to the north and Wales to the west”; “coastlines surrounding it is the English Channel, Celtic, and the Irish Sea”. The land is “50,346 square miles”, also England has the biggest population out of the four the population is “51,446,000 people estimated in 2008”. The capital, which is also the largest city in the U.K., is London. The topography consists of small hills and lowlands. Scotland being the second largest region in the U.K. is located at the northern part of the United Kingdom. It borders “England to the south and has coastlines along the North Sea, Atlantic Ocean, North Channel and Irish Sea”.
