“In 1215, marriage was declared as one of the churches seven sacraments” (“Ellman”). The church has lost all control over marriage. Same sex marriage becoming legal has made that official. “Fewer people are affiliated with religion institutions than in the past, also contributing to a decline in marriage, since religion has been among the staunchest advocates of marriage” (“Marriage Rates”). The main reason marriage is declining is because people do not value marriage like they did in the past.
That people who have kids and families should get married. That getting a divorce when they have kids is selfish and wrong, and that other kinds of relationships aside from marriage is bad for families with kids. Moreover, they say that in order to be a happy family, they need to get married. Those people push the people around them to make harsh decisions in their relationships, ones that could lead to an even worse situation. To better help people with hard situations to make the best decision, we have to support them with their decision making, as no one knows their situation better than they do.
The divorce rate is greater than 50% and there are an untold number of couples in unhappy marriages. With that being said, one can conclude that marriage is not working in present day society. Sure, it may work for a small percentage of the population, but they could easily have a lifelong, monogamous relationship without needing a piece of a paper to validate it. As a society we have a tendency to see the order of a relationship as date, get married, then have children. A numerous amount of couples get married and have kids because they see it as "the next step”.

This causes relationship problems because you will have your family disapproving of what you are doing. By the couple’s family disapproving of it, it can be a great burden on both parties, which can literally break a relationship. No one in their right mind wants their parents disapproval of their relationship. All of this, of course, follows through with religion.
When people get married and divorce so easily it causes many not to take marriage as something serious. Divorce is something that has been discussed and studied many times, as it is becoming more common in the United States. The children are the main ones being effected by the split relationship, however the amount of impact of the effects are based on many variables. I became interested in this subject because my best friends parents recently filed for divorce and I wanted to understand in what ways was this going to affect him in his life now and in the future.
