First Year Model Rockets Dr Hüseyin Sarper’s article, “ First-year project experience in Aerospace: Apogee Determination of Model Rockets with Explicit Consideration of Drag Effec,t” examines the processes associated with determining the apogee of a rocket while exploring the viewpoint of first year students. By utilizing outside research and a variety of scientific tools, Sarper conducts experiments and launches several rockets to calculate the apogee of model rockets. The project takes place within a 1.5 credit portion of a two-credit course in exploration of engineering and technology at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, VA. Dr. Sarper works as a senior professor at ODU, and knows the procedures necessary in rocket launches from his experiences as an associate director of Colorado’s NASA Space Grant Consortium and his degrees from Pennsylvania State University (BS) and …show more content…

Linda Vahala, the Associate Dean and Director of the Engineering Fundamentals Division at ODU and recipient of the Peninsula Engineer of the Year award in 1995. With the information on the two fellow professors, Sarper builds the validity of his colleagues. Well-known agencies such as NASA and colleges such as ODU provide the audience with article credibility and incentive to read the paper. The legitimacy of the research also takes shape in the instruments Sarper employs. For example, Sarper provides pictures of Estes D12-5 engines from Estes Industries, the leading manufacturer in engines and rocket kits. He then explains the purpose of these engines and the proper procedure for their use. The amount of devices Sarper handles depicts the span of mechanisms he uses to gather information. Furthermore, each appliance is clearly defined along with its
