First Driving Narrative

“It is not that difficult, Ash. Just slowly press down on the pedal,” said

Lucas, my one and only, but clearly annoying best friend. It was about mid-

September of last year, the air crisp and cool as the moon creeped its way up

into the eery night. We were seated in Lucas’ car, by the old house he lives in,

white paint peeling down the aged wood. We had the horrific idea to

have my very first driving lesson; henceforth, most likely my last after I

screw this one up.

I had just turned fifteen; as a result, I was desperate to start driving. My

Mom had concluded that she would sign me up for driving school as soon as

possible; unfortunately, I never was patient. That is how I ended up in the

Not to mention, Lucas did not seem to know what he

was doing either. He was seventeen and had been driving for about two years;

however, he wasn't exactly street legal. “Lucas, I can not see over the hood of the car!” I exclaimed,

extremely frustrated. My height had always been a bit on the shorter end;

therefore, a total disadvantage. “Oh my god, here,” Groaned Lucas, rolling his

eyes as he moved my seat up closer to the wheel. My image became more

visible as I could depict the extensive road ahead of me. My palms began to

feel clammy as I tightened my grip on the steering wheel, “I don't know if I

can do this.” Lucas gave me an assuring smile, “You'll be fine, just turn on the

ignition, take it out of park, and slowly press down on the pedal.” He stated. I

did what I was instructed to do, making the car spit and sputter as the engine

finally kicked on. My body shook with tension as the vehicle slowly rolled

down the gravel road.

As the car began to pick up speed, my first instinct was to begin

panicking; unfortunately, I was never good in hands-on situations. I gripped

the steering wheel tighter as I pressed down more forcefully on the
