First base is one of the most important positions on the infield. Other than the pitcher and the catcher the first baseman has the most contact with the ball. For people who want to play first base professionally there is not much information on how to get there physically and mentally. If a baseball player wants to be a true contender he must have his nutritional, physical, and emotional health in order. This essay will explain why first base is important and the factors of personal health are important in the realm of baseball.

The first baseman does not need as strong of an arm as someone on the left side of the infield or the outfield but strength conditioning is still in order for running the bases. The most important part of the workout for any baseball player is the drills specific for his position. For first basemen there is a lot of work and responsibility on his plate. His drills will include field positioning, footwork, catching the ball, holding a runner on base, and the double play. Athletes eat six small meals a day with three hour intervals in between each meal. Athletes need a balanced mix between liquids, carbohydrates, and proteins. Carbohydrates are 60-70 percents of a baseball player's diet. They achieve this intake by eating a mix of fruit, root vegetables, beans, pasta, rice, bread, and cereal. Protein is 15-20 percent of a baseball player's diet. Great sources of protein are beef, chicken, turkey, fish, cheese, milk, egg whites, and yogurt. Fats are unavoidable in life but they are essential in an athlete's life. Fats are about 15 percent of a baseball player's diet; it is needed for burning during intense play and exercise. Athletes should eat 2-3 hours before competition and 60-90 minutes after competition in order to rejuvenate the body. When you are an athlete the goal is to never be thirsty. With liquids intake may vary but the typical amount of hydration is 8-10 ounces every 15-20
