First Amendment Rights have been viewed as essential to the functioning of a free society because a free society is a society where people should have the right to exercise unlimited freedom in their own lives. The First Amendment Rights protect the people’s freedom of religion, speech, press, assemble, petition the government, etc. Without the First Amendment the functioning of a free society wouldn’t exist, the word “FREE” in “Free Society”, wouldn’t be there, because the First Amendment gives us the right to “FREE-dom”.
Not only are the First Amendment Rights an exercise of freedom they are also essential to being able to get more done in our society and economy. Having the ability to express yourself in the world helps people with authority make decisions to benefit themselves and everyone they influence. The President of the United States is not supposed to make selfish decision, he is to listen to what the House of Representatives and Senates …show more content…

All amendments are limited in order to keep the country a safe place to live in. The right to freedom of speech is limited to what you are allowed to say, you can not threaten or imply you are putting people in danger. The government will take that threat seriously and you will be punished for disturbing the peace. An example is the Shenck v. United states case, Charles Shenck made flyers during WWI that he wanted to distribute. Those flyers were to be given to the soldiers that were recently drafted to have them repeal the draft. This led to Shenck being charged with insubordination to the U.S. Military and Navy, he was found guilty because his intentions to undermine the draft were to be in effect after handing out those flyers. It is found that the determination of every sentence depends on the act and the situation at that time, everyone must choose their words wisely or face the consequences of the
