The idea soon influenced medicine, the idea of strengthening the healthy cells and isolating them from the unhealthy ones. The simple idea Darwin discovered had changed medicine as a whole. Today, doctors and scientists are able to manipulate genes in order to create new treatments and cures. Today, Darwin’s discovery changed and saved millions of lives around the world. Despite the fact that genetic engineering can have a negative impact on society, it was an important discovery due to the advancement in conventional medicine.
All advancements in science have led to positive and negative results, yet, the rewards of genetics greatly outweigh the disadvantages. Mankind is entering a new era in medicine—genetic engineering—one that has received criticism. As the field of genetics inevitably becomes integrated with medical practice, people may continue to protest against what they believe genetic engineering will unleash on our society. Rather than allowing fear and ignorance to derail one of the most humane efforts underway, scientists and the society must find bridges of communication and understanding, through education, to promote the benefits of genetic engineering.
(The President’s council on Bioethics 1) Cloning has come very far through science within the last few decades. Although it is a natural part of the world, scientists have taken a simple idea and expanded it further then what was thought possible. Though cloning faces many challenges, scientists such as Dr. Richard Seed continue their research in perfecting cloning in order to benefit the world. Cloning, a controversial topic thought to do harm, but simply misunderstood. The fact is, cloning could improve life more than what can be comprehended or as Dr. Richard Seed said, cloning will be taking “humanity one step closer to God.”
Gene Therapy is a modern treatment which uses genes to treat or prevent genetic diseases. It is a process of which DNA is used as a drug to treat a disease by delivering therapeutic DNA into a patients cell. The mutated gene is replaced by a healthier, functional/therapeutic gene which corrects and converts the cells lacking in protein or faultiness. Our future is based behind our genes in the body and scientists are trying to move away from drugs as a solution. Gene therapy is revolutionising the world of medicine and it could be the biggest and most helpful treatment created.
Through genetic experimentation diseases could cease to plague our citizens, the world could have a new and exciting medical renaissance, and the treatments to diseases would be enduring. Every disease from cancer to arthritis to cystic fibrosis to tay sachs can all be cured through genetics. Instead of having to live with a disease like the sisters, Cate and Laura, did. The US can change the world and lives one treatment at a time. Which is why the United States should openly accept genetic medicine.
Despite mounting evidence scientists have gathered to support their position that organisms past and present are linked through the mechanisms of evolution, one must simply look around to see the process in action. In recent years, the strides scientists have made in the theory of evolution have revealed discoveries that benefit us, but may harm us as well. Beneficial discoveries give us greater knowledge of our origins of life, but some lead to a truth that can lead to death and destruction because organisms that threaten our health receive evolutionary advantages. This threat takes form in antibiotic resistance of infectious diseases. In only the past few decades, antibiotics were hailed as the end to all suffering; a drug that could combat any ailment that plagued an individual.
The advances made in recent years have undoubtedly expanded the overall life span of the human race; humans can now live a longer and more joyous life. Many of the advances in the recent years go to creating new treatments for diseases. Over 58% of all deaths in the United States in 1994 were due to AIDS, cancer, and types of heart diseases (ieeeghn.org). Today this percentage has been lowered drastically thanks to new medications and improved medical procedures in the medical field provided by biomedical engineers. If not for biomedical engineering new medicine wouldn’t be developed.
Henrietta Lack's cells has changed the course of medical research around the world. They have been a crucial part of many medical breakthroughs, and they also have caused us to critically think about the ethics of medical research. Even though there are now quite a few immortal cell lines, HeLa cells will remain to be one of the most widely used and most influential cell lines in history.
"), this is where scientist have come in with the method of injecting stem cells into the areas of ... ... middle of paper ... ... and without stem cell research some of the future and current medical breakthroughs would not be possible. Overall, if the United States continues to fund stem cell research there will be more advances and breakthroughs in the medical field concerning benefits, cures to diseases, and other regenerative projects. The United States prides itself on the long impressive record of leading the entire world in advances in the science and the medical field (Pynes, 10). Stem cell research will continue that status, and if the United States continues to invest in it, stem cell research will help the living conditions and life expectancy for the world. Some may say that stem cell research is the end of an era in which people value human life (pynes, 10); however, it is really the beginning of a discover that could benefit the world’s population for generations to come.
