Introduction:
Technology, and “Social Networking” are a big thing in today‘s world, and also prevalent in the lives of college students. A good percentage of college students frequently browse sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and at this point, social media has an effect on both in school and out of school activities. Social Media can have a detrimental effect on grades, engagement and even on activities out of school, if used in a wrong way. At the same time, social media can be used to also enhance the learning and engagement experience, if used right.
Integrative Review: There is much relevant research regarding social media and its influence on academic achievement benchmarks and activities, such as grade point average, and time spent on studying for classes. Some studies show that student engagement can be impacted by social media, while other studies talk about the usage of Facebook and Twitter and its ability to raise engagement or lower it. The influence of devices and social media on the out of school curriculum was also a concern within one of the studies.
Within two of the research articles, there were similar sources and methods used in order to start the research. In the Junco articles on Facebook and Twitter, both used the NSSE as their measuring tool for engagement in their study and both Junco studies referenced each other in their work. The Junco Twitter article and Jacobson’s Wired Generation research both used similar methods of recruiting their population sample, by using some form of monetary incentive to gather their population and reaching out to students using e-mails and flyers. Michael J. Bugeja, a director of Iowa State University and author of the article “Facing the Facebook” in The Chronicle of Higher Education, argues that technology in schools was supposed to have a positive outcome, it was supposed to help students engage and network yet it 's only becoming a distraction. Students are more entertained by social media, and technology than education. Although he concedes that social media is “fascinating” and is a resourceful way for social interaction; he also argues how it has taken a toll on “The Facebook generation”. Technology has begun to limit the student 's mind and affect their academic intelligence.

Social network sites is often an easy distraction tool disturbing you when you are supposed to be doing your homework or studies. Many students believe they are capable of multitasking and finishing their work with cohesive and logical connections. Netherlands psychologist Paul A. Kirschnera of the Centre for Learning Sciences and Technologies at the Open University of the Netherlands and Aryn C. Karpinskib of Ohio State University conducted a study examining 219 U.S. university students. Kirschnera found that Facebook users typically had a grade point average of 3.06 while non-users had a grade point average of 3.82. Kirschnera states that he isn’t trying to demonize Facebook, but demonstrate the distracting nature of social network sites (Daily Mail). Social networking has made its way into American culture quickly and is more prevalent now than ever before. Many people have different views on the relevance and benefits of social networking, whether they are positive or negative standpoints. Nevertheless, social media and networking is a part of our American lifestyles as a whole. As a Computer Information Systems major and studying the foundations and composition of computer applications, I would like to research the effects that social networks have on underclassmen undergraduate students attending an Historically Black College or University. In order to conduct this research, a study and survey must be held to determine whether social networking positively or negatively affects grade point averages by recording the number of social networks students are actively using and the number of hours spent on these applications in comparison to grade point averages. This research is important because there are many individuals who do not know the effects of their social networking, or lack thereof, has on their grades, sleeping patterns, health, and lifestyles in general. Although this research will focus on grade point averages of students, it will also determine if social networking has effects on other aspects of the college life such as sleeping patterns, health, and awareness.
As technology increases and develops in this century, the use of social media increases as well. Schools have begun adapting it, using it as their tool to inform students of any school related news. However, using it as a tool for learning is a different story. By using it as a tool, it can push you off your course with classes. Social media is something that is not needed at school grounds. Schools should not require social media use in classes.
The web is no longer a read only product, it now has the ability to be interactive and particpatory. Users are able to interact over the internet with each other with instant messaging and emails and use social networks to share news, videos, and photos with others, bringing people with common interest, opinions, and experiences together and closer. Some of the most popular social networks include Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn. Currently social networks are mostly used to keep in touch with friends, colleagues, peers and family, there are far more benefits, that the social media platform can provide. This paper explores the topic of social media in modern education. There are benefits and disadvantages to social media being used in the classroom setting, and they are discussed in detail through the paper.
Exposing students to the power of social media in the classroom is an important part of preparing them to be active and positive digital citizens in a 21st century world. In the last two years, my own students have rapidly been drawn to Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and many other social networking platforms. They upload, share, and connect with others often without any regard to how their digital footprints may reflect them as individuals. Having continuous conversations with students about the choices that they make can lead to positive results. Students don't realize how powerful social media platforms can be in terms of networking, researching, and engaging in academic conversations. It makes me laugh every time I hear them whisper about my colleague Heather's or my Twitter feed. First of all kids, I can hear you. Second of all, yes, social media can be an amazing way to give and exchanged knowledge.

However, this can prove to be a huge problem for many persons especially students because the use of social media could have a negative effect on students’ academic performance. EDUCATION- Teachers are able to easily collaborate and communicate with students and one another by using teaching tools such as google classroom and other blogs. Students also use social media to gather relevant information and to communicate with their colleagues for homework and group projects.
