Have you ever lost something you loved very much? Like a toy when you were younger or something? I know I have. I feel the theme for The Great Gatsby goes along the lines of love is hard to find, if you lose love you might regret finding it in the first place. Now I know that kind of sounds a little harsh, but hear me out.
Mr. Jay Gatsby is a confusing man and in the book it describes him as a very mysterious man. Nick states on page 21 “When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness.” Now Jay Gatsby fell in love with a girl by the name of Daisy before he went off to war and he was planning on marrying her when he got back. When he returned from war he found that Daisy had married another man. Five years went by and Mr. Gatsby met Nick Caraway a man that will change Jay’s life forever. Jay, with Nicks help sets up a so-called “date” at Nicks house so Jay can meet Daisy. Mr. Gatsby tries all sorts of ways to get Daisy to come back to him, from showing her around his estate to throwing a massive party for her. Jay states on page 150, “I can’t describe to you how surprised I was to find out I loved her, old sport. I even hoped for a while that she’d throw me over, but she didn’t, because she was in love with me too.” It almost works to. Until one night when Daisy, furious from her husband Tom fighting with Jay over whom Daisy really loves and Jay screaming, “Your wife doesn’t love you, she’s never loved you. She loves me.” page 130, Daisy accidentally runs over Myrtle in Jay Gatsby’s car. Consequently Myrtles husband George Wilson guns down Jay Gatsby in his pool. The theme that I chose works well with Jay Gatsby’s role in the book The Great Gatsby. Jay fell in love with Daisy but ...

...a lot in this book a few examples would be Jay Gatsby and Daisy and Tom Buchanan and Myrtle. Losing love happens in the book as well. Love can be very hard to find, it can take years to find the right person. Jay found the right person and lost her because he didn’t make the right decision. Daisy found the right person and lost him because of an accident she caused. And Tom found love in the worst way possible, but at least he found it, and consequently lost his love to the face of death.
I think once you find love you never think that it would be possible to lose it, but sometimes you do, and to save yourself you shouldn’t try to get that love back. Because in the end you might end up regret finding it in the first place. As F. Scott Fitzgerald says in the last line of the book “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” a
