“A single death is a tragedy, a million dead is a statistic” (Faulkner Par. 8). Joseph Stalin, the dictator of the Soviet Union, said this statement to the world. Many people suspect that he said this because of his poor childhood. Apparently he was, “Born in poverty. . . While his father was a shoemaker and an alcoholic who beat [Stalin] his son” (Stalin Par. 4). Not only was his family life erratic, his school life was too. On, “1899, Stalin was expelled from the seminary for missing exams” (Stalin Par. 4). He had no support from his family or teachers; therefore, he joined the Bolshevik Revolutionaries (Stalin Par. 5). The Bolshevik seized the power in Russia in November 1917 and Joseph Stalin became the dictator by the late 1920s (Stalin Par. 8). Throughout his dictatorship and life, Stalin accomplished 3 main things: modernization of society, 2nd largest economy, and helped defeat Hitler.
