Nucor Corporation is the largest producer of steel in the United States with the capacity to produce 27 tons of steel if needed and the largest steel producer in North America's largest recycler as well. Nucor has 200 operating facilities and 90 businesses that operate separately, but compete collectively and are the sole owners of Harris Steel, The David J. Joseph Company, and Skyline Steel, yet they only have 100 people working in their corporate office with a few layers of management between the CEO and the Frontline.
Impressive as these numbers are the real reason that I chose to write about this company as they are a great example of a company that applies the five practices of exemplary leadership and this application of these practices are largely the reason this company has been so successful.
In 1905, Ransom Olds, who created the Oldsmobile had a disagreement with stockholders and ultimately left his company Olds Motor Works. Later he formed REO Motor Company, which became the Nuclear Corporation and eventually Nucor. REO was successful until the end of the Korean War, when REO assets were merged with Nuclear Consultants and thus the formation of the Nuclear Corporation of America.
With this merger Nuclear made two moves that changed the company and the steel industry. The first was acquiring a company named Vulcraft and the second hiring Ken Iverson. Iverson begins by selling of division that was not efficient and moving the corporate headquarters from Phoenix, Arizona to Charlotte, North Carolina and he suggested that Nuclear enter into the steel business.

Nucor stands out as the best example of a company that practices the five practices of exemplary leadership as they model the way for their employees by doing away with the hierarchy and allowing the worker to share in the success of the company. They inspire a shared vision by engaging the workers in creating new ideas to improve their processes, and challenge the process by trying the ideas instead of ignoring suggestion or coming up with excuses as to why they will not work. This culture enables the workers to act on their own and thus build collaboration and respect and encourages the workers to soar to heights that most companies only read about in articles.
Andrew Carnegie had no competition. By 1900 Carnegie Steel produced more metal than all of Great Britain. He controlled almost all of the steel produced and used in America. Carnegie used vertical integration, which means that he owned all the companies and resources need to make and process steel, thus giving him the edge and he was able to cut down costs.

One of the men Carnegie met in his early work career was Thomas A. Scott, which erupted his impressive career at Pennsylvania Railroad. Carnegie always loved steel since his first encounter with it, from there he knew steel would revolutionize the world. Carnegie was able to achieve great success through vertical integration. Vertical integration is the process of controlling the entire manufacturing of the industry. For example, Carnegie controlled the marketing and production of the steel, thus saving him and his steel corruption an abundance of money. Carnegie monopoly produced more steel than Britain by itself. In addition to vertical integration, there was horizontal integration, which was used by John D. Rockefeller. Martinez had extensive experience in management prior to joining the medical field. As a single working mother, she worked her way up from waitress to manger of a popular seafood restaurant. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (Covey, 2004) has become the cornerstone of leadership and management wisdom. The habits emphasize personal responsibility and personal leadership. There is challenge in living everyday under the guidance of the habits but there is also great benefit as living the habits can influence everything we do in life. I was introduced to Covey’s seven habits through a one day seminar at my workplace several years ago. I learned some of the terminology and a few of the concepts but never really understood the power of the practical application of the habits. Reading the Covey materials has taught me that life is not about all the tasks that I accomplish but instead about accomplishing the tasks that support what is important to me. Covey has taught me that there are elemental components that are applicable across the many roles that I have in my life. Those universal elements are integrity, vision, discipline, and passion. Embracing these ideas has opened my eyes to the endless applications and benefits of living the seven habits.
People always talk about how important it is for companies to have a good leader, someone who not only keeps the blue numbers, but also achieves a loyalty from customers, pleasant working environment, successful business partnerships and ahead of the competition.
Those who embrace positive leadership are authentic and passionate individuals whose work ethics are align with greater good of the organization. There are five practices for effective positive leadership (commit to a higher purpose, build trust, be driven by strengths and values, focus on the humans-not just the job, personify a growth mindset). Positive leadership begins with senior leaders of the organization by applying the five practices and encouraging subordinates to do the same. SGMs are the key ambassadors for positive leadership, as they have enhanced and mastered the five practices of positive leadership.
The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership consist of five ways that anyone can follow to become a leader. The five practices are based upon extensive research and expertise. Although the five practices we have been reading about applied specifically to student leaders, anyone can follow the five steps to leadership to be an exemplary leader. The five practices include Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision. Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart.
Authentic leaders have revolutionized the world of business by focusing on what they are passionate about, on becoming the best in their industry on their specialty.
