I am so happy you point out the fact that in the Synagogue women and men are separated, and it is interesting because I was raised in a Christian household, and although we believe that a man is the head of the house, a woman does have a say in the decision and is not separated.

Women have always played a major role in the practice of Judaism. They have many responsibilities and obligations to fulfill due to of their faith. Yet, they also must raise their families and often work to provide for their family. Overtime, Jewish women have become an example of women’s ability to live very demanding lives and still sustain her religious devotion. Jewish women have had to overcome numerous obstacles in incorporating the changes inherent with ever-evolving life with their static religious duties. Thus was the case for any Jew who chose to move away from their community and start a new life. Many pioneers found it hard to remain practicing Jews when there were no other Jewish people around them. Some observances became difficult to exercise given the surrounding and Jews would sometimes have to compromise their traditions with physical practicality. This led to great personal struggle for women who had always felt that the family’s religious sanctity was her responsibility. But these fascinatingly resourceful and dedicated women found ways to overcome the hindrances that their new home provided and still plant the seeds that would grow into a rich and strong Jewish community regardless of where they lived.
“His and Her Circumstances,” directed by Anno Hideaki in 1998, is a Japanese romance anime that depicts the growing relationship between a girl named Miyazawa and a boy named Arima, two Japanese high school students. Miyazawa is an honors student who feeds on attention and praise. She pretends to be ‘the perfect student’ on the other hand, Arima excels in everything. Within the German Democratic Republic, there was a secret police force known as the Stasi, which was responsible for state surveillance, attempting to permeate every facet of life. Agents within and informants tied to the Stasi were both feared and hated, as there was no true semblance of privacy for most citizens. Directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, the movie The Lives of Others follows one particular Stasi agent as he carries out his mission to spy on a well-known writer and his lover. As the film progresses, the audience is able to see the moral transformation of Stasi Captain Hauptmann Gerd Wiesler primarily through the director 's use of the script, colors and lighting, and music.
While Christianity is strictly a superset of Judaism, taking nothing only fulfilling prophesies, modern Christianity goes further. Jewish faith is based off of the Torah. The Torah outlines the laws and traditions every Jew should follow. Christians would recognize the Torah as Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, all part of the Christian’s Old Testament. In addition to these books the Holy Bible contains the New Testament. These accounts fulfill many prophesies that are spelled out in the Old Testament. However, many Christians lose the meaning of New Testament words. The Bible was written by Jews, for Jews. Because of this, there are many stories and phrases that are misunderstood or simply looked over. Christians have forgotten their beginnings. They no longer understand all of the traditions and holidays that Judaism entails. Sadly, this means many important lessons are never even noticed. Even though Judaism does not include the New Testament in their Torah, they do not ignore all together. Many Orthodox Jews see it as wonderful advice, even though it isn’t sacred.
In Judaism, women are held in a high regard. Jewish men are to love their wives and respect them. In fact, the Talmud outlines that a husband must treat his wife with immense love and respect and never degrade her. This is very similar to Islam seeing as the man is supposed to serve as a protector to his wife. Unlike Islam, a Jewish man is allowed to use his wife’s income. However, if a woman develops an illness, her husband is expected to take care of her and make sure she goes back to good health; this is stated in the Talmud. When it came time to pick a stage of development, I chose the stage of middle childhood. The movie that best depicted this stage of development to me was the 1991 movie “My Girl”. In this movie, you see a 11-year-old girl named Vada Sultenfuss going through a lot of psychosocial and cognitive changes in her life. She has grown up without her mother due to instant death when being born and she blames herself for her mother’s passing. There are many different types of strategies that women of faith traditions employ to negotiate their understanding of gender roles, norms, and beliefs. One strategy is by social practices, evangelical women are informed by biblical commands about appropriate gender relations and traditional Protestant viewpoints of individual moral responsibility before God. Whereas, Orthodox Jewish women negotiate their gender identities by wrestling with cultural mandates concerning Passover preparation and dominant interpretations. Lastly, Conservative Catholic women contend with laws about women’s place in the Church and the relevance of their identities as Catholic women.
Recently, within the past few decades, the role of women in Judaism has dramatically improved. The rippling effect of the Women’s Rights Movement empowered Jewish women to push for widespread reform of Judaic law. Since Biblical times, women in general were held to an inferior level compared to men, and this was no different for Jewish women. However, big strides have been made within the past century to elevate the status of the Jewish woman in the public sphere as well in the privacy of their homes.
Christianity, Judaism and Indigenous religions, all have something in common, that they followed oral traditions before actually having a set book or guidelines. This increases the importance of oral tradition because people followed these traditions and created certain ways of living around them. The first religion to be explained is Judaism. According to page 96 of World Religions Today, “The Pharisees took these demands and made them the content for the priestly rituals of holiness, working out their application in all the details of everyday life [,] according to the best insights of the oral tradition” (Esposito, Fasching& Lewis, 2012). The writings came from the Prophets and further more shaped the way the Jewish people lived. Next, is Christianity. According to page 158, “Taking advantage of historical and archeological findings that shed additional light on the biblical period, modern scholars do not believe any Gospel had a single author. Rather each one began in shared oral traditions as told in different communities of believers after Jesus’s death on the cross and attested resurrection” (Esposito, et al., 2012). This means, Christian beliefs are actually passed down from generation to generation. Christianity is thus based on oral tradition. Finally, there is Indigenous religions. The Catholic Church and other religions exist due to their cultural environment, and in turn these cultural are influenced by the religions that exist within them the help to shape them. People live their faith and they express it though their cultural so of course these two are connected. Looking at culture as the worldview of guiding our lives and if people shape a cultural then the religion that shapes their life will most likely shape yours in either a positive or even negative way.
