In 2006 the hit crime drama The Departed was released in theaters. The film is a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Internal Affairs. This crime drama was filmed in the early 2005 and takes place around the same time period. This is known by Alec Baldwin’s character Captain Ellerby saying how he loves the Patriot Act while conducting surveillance on Frank Costello played by Jack Nicolson. Throughout the film we see fast takes, heavy use of shaky cam, disjointed edits, out-of-order cuts, and continuity confusion is to help add to that sense of that hustling, bustling mass of confusion that is part of organized crime. This only adds to the movie's sense of disorientation and confusion felt by Billy Costigan played by Leonardo DiCaprio, and Colin Sullivan played by Matt Damon. The beginning of the film follows Costello veiled in darkness as he makes his rounds in Irish ran Boston, where he meets a young Colin Sullivan. Costello tells him he knew his parents and grandmother, then proceeds to tell the deli owner to give Sullivan groceries to take home and some money, telling him to find him if he wants work before sending him off. Next it shows Sullivan looking up to Costello like a father figure and joining the Massachusetts State Police department. Costigan began his career as means to change his life and to show that although coming from a bad family he was good and wanted to the right thing. He worked hard to enroll into the State Troopers and was interview by Captain Queenan played by Martin Sheen, and Staff Sergeant Dignam played by Mark Wahlberg, only to be told he would not become a Trooper but instead an undercover agent in Costello’s crew.
