Film: Still The Better Choice

The first photograph was taken by Joseph Niepce in 1814. This image required eight hours of light exposure and later faded shortly after (Bellis). Now, 200 years later, just about everyone has access to the technology required to take high resolution photographs instantly with the push of a button, but is this new technology really better than film? Digital cameras have made photography much simpler and more popular, but their convenience comes at the expense of photograph quality.
Since there are so many different people, each with different ideas of what good photography is, who have access to cameras, there are countless different styles of photography and each one of these photographers has his/her own beliefs about which style really is the best. A hot debate that has been raging on since the introduction of digital cameras to the world of photography is whether or not digital cameras are actually superior to the film cameras that have been used for so long. Although digital photography does has some advantages over film, film is better overall for professional photography.
Resolution is the most common way people will describe the quality of a photograph. Both film and digital are capable of taking photographs in resolution high enough for almost any practical purpose; however, in the hands of a skilled photographer, film almost always has far better resolution than digital (Rockwell). Film is over 100 years old so it has had time to be perfected while digital cameras are relatively new compared to that. In the future digital may yield better resolution than film, but that has not happened yet. Of course it really all comes down to the equipment.
