Film Review of The Crucible The Crucible: A Film Review Who'd have thought that simple dancing could cause so much chaos in a small town. This is precisely what happens in the film The Crucible (Nicholas Hytner, 1996), which was originally written as a play by Arthur Miller. This story is based on actual events, which helps in showing the accuracy of the events. The story takes place in Salem in 1692, during the Salem witch trials. The story starts when a group of young girls, particularly one named Abigail, are caught dancing around a fire in the woods by the town preacher, Samuel Parris. In an effort to avoid getting in trouble, the girls begin to make accusations against the townspeople, saying that these people are witches who forced them to dance. As the hysteria grows in Salem, people begin to question their own neighbors, simply out of spite and vengeance, among other things. The Crucible is certainly historically accurate in it's portrayal of the townspeople's beliefs and attitudes. It is a film that should be seen to view the way people were in the seventeenth century. Fear was probably the biggest reason for all of the happenings. Fear is what got the girls started on their accusations, as they were afraid to get in trouble. They knew that if they were thought to be conjuring spirits, they would be hung. The townspeople were also afraid, especially of those who were different. They felt that they must be rid of anyone who disagreed with their beliefs. Just look at how the Puritans treated the Indians. They feared the Native Americans because their beliefs were different than their own. Also, the main reason that people were accused in the first place, is because when Tituba was being questioned, they were asking if she saw Sara Good and Sara Osborne with the Devil. Of course she said yes, they were threatening to kill her. Another example of fear in the village, is the fear of accepting your own actions and taking responsibility. The Puritans believed in predestination, and if the girls were dancing just to dance, and not because the Devil took them from their path to God, the townspeople would then have to take the responsibility for that, as it would be thier fault for letting these girls go astray. They were also afraid of change. Change in their beliefs would shut down the entire town, because it was built mainly on their ideology.
The tsunami in Thailand that occurred on December 26, 2004, was by far the largest tsunami catastrophe in human history. It was triggered by a magnitude 9.1-9.3 earthquake along the Indian-Australian subduction zone off the northern coast of Sumatra. The tsunami waves traveled primarily in the east to west direction and caused major damage along the coasts of southern Thailand. Unpredictably, it was a violent earthquake beneath the sea that initiated the massive waves and struck more than a dozen countries in Southern Asia. It also destroyed thousands of miles of coastline and even submerged entire islands permanently. Throughout the region, the tsunami killed more than 150,000 people, and a million more were hurt, homeless, and without food or drinkable water, making it perhaps the most destructive tsunami in the modern history. In spite of peninsular Thailand's location facing the northern part of this subduction zone, the lack of any written historical records, together with the lack of any major local seismic activity, the tsunami caused thousands of fatalities and huge economic losses in the popular tourist regions in Thailand. Immediately after the disaster, numerous organizations and individual citizens have helped out and contributed to this devastating tsunami. Indeed, the tsunami in Thailand was a worldwide event, with significant wave action felt around the world. In this context, I am focusing more on the key features of the tsunami’s natural causes, the psychological effects on citizens, the perspective of socio-economic impacts and the consequences of the tsunami calamity.
Toy companies have strategic ways to market their products to consumers. One of the most common strategies is to market their toys to a specific gender. This shows with the separate aisles that are designed for each gender. So, this separation of gender could lead way to the idea that “Toyland is boy and girl land” (Auster, Claire). These ideas of “boy and girl land” play upon the stereotypes of each specific gender and impose these conventional stereotypes on children. When these girl specific aisles lack in the ...
In The Crucible, the witchcraft phenomenon of Salem in 1692 is depicted by how the town acted irrationally. The accused had to lie to avoid death and the town’s accusations were clouded by its beliefs. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the play connects with the real life events but also has that sense of fiction.
“The Crucible” was created as an allegory for the events of the red scare and McCarthyism, a crisis that can relate to today. Instead of fighting and hunting the communist in America, it has changed to hunting and fighting for the illegal immigrants and terrorist in America. Terrorism and illegal immigrants are our nation's modern crisis. The people of Salem's crisis were the “witches” inhabited in their colony. Like the people of Salem and McCarthyism,
The Crucible, a play written by Arthur Miller. The Crucible takes place in the 1600’s in Salem, Massachusetts. The genre would be either Historical Drama or Thriller. To fully understand toys as a reinforcement of gender roles, one can observe the display of toys in Toys R Us. When walking in a toy store, one can see the obvious categories the toys are separated by which is by sex. Entering Toys R Us, one can see the categories of the aisles on the left side are in blue. Some of the categories in this section were action figures, cars and trucks. From an overall view, the colors showcased from these aisles are in dark colors such as dark blue, black, dark grey, dark green, dark orange, etc. In this part of t...
Many people view gender as a mostly solid, rigid, unchangeable thing, but they are only seeing it through their viewpoint as many cultures and individuals have their own way of viewing gender identity and gender roles. One way gender comes into play is with children’s toys which are divided into boys’ and girls’ toys in a very consistent manner. Elizabeth Sweet from The New York Times, discusses the gender-based marketing of toys and whether gender-neutral toys would help or hurt children and their gender development, stating herself that “making toys gender-inclusive doesn’t prevent a girl from selecting a pink doll or a boy from picking a blue truck- it just stops such a selection from being obligatory” (Sweet, 2014) . Large waves crash against the shore while people run for high ground. But many, just stare in wonder. What actually was going on was a tsunami. A earthquake had just struck in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Soon the waves got larger and larger before they wiped out the whole village. Tsunamis are large waves reaching over 300 ft. that wipe out it ire villages, city's, homes, and stores. Many tsunamis leave the area flooded , destroyed, and filled with sea animals such as whales, dolphins, sharks, and other things. Then, the tsunamipulls back pulling all of the debris it destroyed back into the ocean polluting the whole sea environment. Tsunamis don't just cause short term effects, they cause long term also the Japan tsunami broke a nuclear power plant releasing thousands of gallons of contamination into the Pacific Ocean killing sea life and contaminating nature. (Walker, 29) Many may know about tsunamis but not all know how they are made, and some only assume one way but there are multiple.
This research question for this study consisted of wanting to know the preschooler’s views on gender related games and toys. The hypothesis consisted of stating that this study was focusing on whether gender specifically age and sex had an impact on views of toys and games. The research was done due the fact that there is so much information on how early boys and girls distinguish between their sex along with the roles they should follow. The literature discusses how boys tend to play in a more open environment, more rough and with their sex as to where females play in more enclosed spaces, their own sex and more gentle (Oncu & Unluer, 2012). The main gap found within this literature is that the researchers are mainly focusing on the age and sex and if they correlate with their views on games and toys.

Toys are a key factor when it comes to gender socialization. Children are given toys based on their gender for most of their childhood. For this assignment, I went into an average Wal-Mart to analyze the differences between various toys and their respective aisles. One large factor in any toy section layout is the infamous “pink aisle,” taking its name from the bright shades of pink on most of the packaging. This is where a large majority of the “girl” toys are shelved. These toys, hardly deviating from perhaps a handful of brands and characters, typically fall under some category that teaches caregiving. The caregiving ranges from caring for a Barbie, to caring for a pink pony. Occasionally, one may find a plastic oven to break up the uniformity. Upon leaving this aisle, one will

This traditional Mexican breakfast food requires only eight ingredients, including chicken, mayonnaise, and tortillas. May seem guilty but due to roast (not fried) each time no more than 300 calories and 2 grams of saturated fat.
“Reverse faults are the primary cause of the largest tsunamis. This is when two plates collide and one plate is lifted over the other plate. While these plates are generally in constant motion. it is at the junction of their boundaries where the plates are locked together and the stress between them begins to build. As the two plates remain locked together, stress continues to build at their intersection. As a result, the sea floor is pulled down with a corresponding rise on the continental side of the fault” (Generation of a Tsunami…). Most of the tsunamis are caused by earthquakes. An earthquake can cause the tsunami by, once an earthquake happens on the seafloor, large pieces of rock move past each other very suddenly, causing the water above to move. Once the earthquake happens, the large, fast-moving, waves move away from the spot the earthquake had happened towards land. 15% of all damaging tsunamis were triggered by strike-slip earthquakes. However, this type of earthquake is less likely to trigger a tsunami than one with vertical motion. Tsunamis are generated by associated landslides or motion of a sloping bathymetry (seafloor) feature and normally affect regions near the source only. The less common cause of a tsunami is a large volcanic eruption causing
