Many early films made were based on religious contexts and have evolved from romanticism to thrillers, telling different stories (Fang, 1997). There have always been different national cultures being expressed in film. This is seen both in a deliberate and an unconscious fashion until the rise of Hitler in 1933 who stressed that the film should be seen as an art form (Briggs & Burke, 2009). Used by Hitler, the United States, and other world leaders during World War II, the film was seen as a force of with considerable impact onto discourse and culture. Realizing film was not only an entertainment apparatus, but also a tool to disseminate propaganda to the masses. During the Cold War with the red scare running rampant across the U.S., many actors, writers, and directors were black listed from working on films if they were suspected of communist leaning and denied work (Briggs & Burke, 2009; Fang, 1997; Jowett & O’Donnell, 2006). Because of film 's great effects among the masses, censorship policies were implemented by the United States government and other governments worldwide. Starting in 1909 movies began to be censored by the National Board of Censorship of Motion Pictures in America (Briggs & Burke, 2009; Jowett & O’Donnell, 2006). In America in the 1930’s, a Production Code was implemented that allowed only certain films to be viewed by the public, and rejecting other films that were deemed unacceptable to the masses, showing once more how great of an impact film had onto its audience. On a technical aspect, television is very much different from a film 's creation. Social media fundamentally allows counterculture political subjectivity that has been imposed upon by leaders of oppressive nations (Markham, 2014). The information being broadcasted across users’ devices and social media platforms were no longer in control by the institutionalized communicators, causing them to lose control of the masses public discourse and cultural acceptance of the status quo. The unfiltered information brought about new discourse in society, new realities, and cultural revolutions were formed to bring conflict against the traditional style of discourse. New political subjectivity dispersed from social networks permeated through the dictatorial imposed discourse and culture (Markham, 2014).
