Film Making Film production phases Film production is the process of making a film starting from the story or idea through scriptwriting, shooting to the distribution of the movie to the audience. There are four main phases involved in film making. Development phase In the development phase, the film is written from the story (Cones, p. 195). The story may come from a book, a play, another film or an original idea developed by the film producer. During the development of the film, the film producer works in corroboration with the film writers to develop the film message and a theme of the message. They then prepare a synopsis of the film. The film producer and the writers then prepare a step outline of the film that break the whole film into scenes that focus on the dramatic structure of the scenes (Cones, p. 195). They later prepare a concrete description of the film story including its characters and the mood of the film. A screenplay is then written which is presented to the investors, studios, and all other interested parties for assessment. A film pitch is then prepared and that is presented to the financiers. If the pitch becomes successful, the film gets financial backing after which it proceeds to the pre-production phase. Pre-production phase The steps of making the actual film are outlined in this phase that includes drawing up the required budget (Stein and Bingham, p.29). The film production company is created in this phase as well as hiring the crew that shall be used in the film production (Stein and Bingham, 2009). Production phase In the production phase, the creation and shooting of the movie takes place. Movies today are extremely expensive to make and are typically financed through either film studio contracts or from investors willing to take a risk. In order to be successful, movies need to be marketed and distributed either under contract by the film studios or by companies that specialize in such services. The aspects of financing, marketing and distribution of films have changed between the studio and independent systems over the years as the evolution of the film industry took place.

Auteurism is a term first coined by Francois Truffaut to describe the mark of a film director on his films. A director can be considered an auteur if about five of his film depict a certain style that is definitely his own. In other words, much like one can look at a painting and tell if it is a Monet, a Renoir, or a Degas, if a film director is an auteur, one can look at his film and tell by style and recurring themes that it was made by a certain director. In auteur films, the director is many times what brings an audience to the theater, instead of the actors or storyline. I am going to take a look at three of the most noted auteurs: Frederico Fellini, Satyajit Ray, and Alfred Hitchcock.

With this short but very interesting and informative class I have just scratched the surface of the what it takes to make a full fleged film. It takes much more than I had presumed to make a movie in Hollywood. The number of people that it takes to make a minute of a movie let alone the entire movie was astonishing to me. There are many things that it takes to start making a movie but without an idea of some sort there is no movie to be made.

With the rising popularity of films across the world, the amount of film makers increases every day. Many technological innovations mark the advancement of film making, but the essential process remains the same. Pre-production accounts for everything taken place before any shooting occurs, followed by the actual production of the film, post-production will then consist of piecing the film together, and finally the film must reach an audience. Each step of this process contributes to the final product, and does so in a unique right. The process of film making will now start chronologically, stemming from the idea of the story, producing that story into a film, editing that footage together, and finally delivering that story to its viewers.
