Genres is the name given to the category, classification or group of films that have similar techniques or conventions. There are many type of genres. The primary (main) film genres are action, adventure, comedy, crime, drama, epics, horror, musicals, science fiction, war, and westerns. Genres are important because it helps the film viewers choose a movie that may interest and entertain them and it also gives them a brief idea of the storyline of the movie. For example, the story line in a romantic movie is that a guy gets his ideal girl after a conflict. Movies in a specific genre all share in similar techniques and convention. Action movies usually have continuous energy, rescues, escape plans, physical stunts, chases, fights, special effects, battles and races. The plot of action movie is usually about a hero (protagonist) or a group facing challenges or resolving problems caused by a villain (antagonist). The very first film of this genre is The Great Train Robbery which was released in 1903. This was a silent, short action-western movie. Action films continued to expand in the 80’s and 90’s. Action is a primary film genre. There are sub genres in action as well and many action movie overlap with other primary genres. Sub genres include super hero films, spy, crime, thriller, martial arts, disaster films, action-comedy action-war, action-adventure. These sub-genres have slightly different storyline and different budgets. For example, in a superhero film, the conflict is caused by a villain. Actors are important in this genre because they bring the characters to life because they have similar looks and personality as the characters. They are helping the audience visualise how a person would look like if they had superpowers and they are creating stereotypes on how an action movie character would look like. For example, a villain may have scars or intimidating body features while the hero looks better and more welcoming. The directors are important in an action movie because they mentor the cast and crew and give them instructions. The directors have the main roles in the movie because they make the movie according to what they visualised when they read the script. Action movies are the result of the creative visualisation of directors. The script writers are important in an action movie because the story line is the backbone of a good movie. When writing the script for an action movie the screenwriter must include good character development, believable characters and engaging plot points. The cinematographer is important in an action movie because they are the ones that shoot the movie. They must get the camera angles right for the audience to know who is in power and for it to be realistic and engaging. The cinematographer must shoot the movie in a way that the audience can perceive it the way it was intended to
The horror genre of film captives the frightfulness of individual fear, horror is the only genre that is meant captive the terror of the audience. The horror- the genre has been around well over one hundred- years there has been an extension of different types of horror and how the audience perceives horror. Many would even argue that horror films often reflect the fear of society in that certain time period. The evolution of horror reflects the evolution of society’s fear.
Film genre is a distinctive collection of comparisons in the narrative aspects from which the films are produced. Genre denotes the characterization of narrative films, through the stories the literature tells and the way it presents these stories (Barsam and Monahan, 2013.) Film genres are often described by a set of conventions of storytelling such as themes, conflicts, situations, setting, character types, story formula, presentation, visual style, and even movie stars associated with particular genres (Barsam and Monahan, 2013). These conventions are not always enforced as filmmakers incorporate only some of these elements within any particular film. A few commonly recognized film genres include the Western, musical, horror, science fiction, and etc. A genre-bender film steps outside some of the defining features of its genre in terms of its conventions but is easily identified when it has been blended with another genre. The gangster film genre concentrates on stories whose principal struggle is between criminals and the society they live in. This genre typically emphasizes a cautionary tale that is demonstrated by the main character who commits crimes (Barsam and Monahan, 2013.) Also, this genre is often blended with film noir, a distinct genre made discernible by its mood of pessimism, and fatalism. The film, Bonnie and Clyde directed by Arthur Penn in 1967, is an example of a genre-bending gangster film due to its distinct genre conventions of story formula, setting, and character types that step outside of the typical gangster film genre conventions.

Anticipation, suspense, tension, excitement - these words come to mind when we think of the genre, Thriller. According to The Script Lab, thriller’s aim is “to keep the audience alert and on the edge of their seats” (Buffam, 2015). In these movies the main character, or the protagonist, is faced with a problem - whether it being a mystery, an escape or a mission. Just like every other genre in the film industry, Thrillers also contain a few sub-genres - but the main focus of every Thriller film out there it will always underline the menace that the hero faces.
Film scholars around the world agree that all genres of film are part of the “genre cycle”. This cycle contains four different stages that a specific genre goes through. These stages are: primitive, classic, revisionist, and parody. Each stage that the genre goes through brings something different to that genre’s meaning and what the audience expects. I believe that looking at the horror genre will be the most beneficial since it has clearly gone through each stage.
Hollywood in the 30’s and 40’s was the golden-age of a new era of filmmaking. The films of that period went beyond the silent films being produced in the past. Diagetic sounds like dialogue and more advanced filmic techniques would push cinema to a new mode of filmmaking, that being classicism. The classical Hollywood structure was being developed in the past with silent films but it came to full fruition in the 30’s, where many filmmakers would produce feature-length films with fully developed storylines and the use of glamorous lighting and larger-than life characterizations to give audiences a more cinematic experience. Genre films like: the gangster, comedy, western, horror, and other various genres of the era, provided large revenue for studios and the creative means for filmmakers to manipulate the mise-en-scene to make each genre films slightly different from the rest. Classicism would provide audiences with clear-cut characterizations, simple storylines, non-intrusive directing, and simple but entertaining conclusions that neatly wrap up the story.
Before the civil rights movement could begin, a few courageous individuals had to guide the way. Dr. Vernon Johns was one of those individuals. Dr. Vernon Johns was a pastor and civil rights activist in the 1920s. Johns became the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama in the late 1940s. During his time as a pastor, Johns preached many sermons on how African American people were being treated not only in the community but in society. Johns on multiple occasions upset his community through his ideas on social change. Through a sociologist perspective, many sociological concepts were displayed in The Vernon Johns Story. Most genres share specific genre conventions. Stereotypical plots or certain predictable characters are expected to appear during a film of a desired genre. These are the conventions which group films into subgenres. Other than visual and audio conventions, those concerning mise-en-scene, cinematography, sound, lighting and editing, genres often also make boundaries around the type of thematic notions that are presented within films.

Films that are classified as being in the film noir genre all share some basic characteristics. There is generally a voice-over throughout the film in order to guide the audience's perceptions. These movies also involve a crime and a detective who is trying to figure out the truth in the situation. This detective usually encounters a femme fatale who seduces him. However, the most distinctive feature of the film noir genre is the abundance of darkness.
This is different between American and Asia cultures, when I readied a thesis I found the answer. In Asia human don’t like actors just have one character. Sometime human wants actors could be good or bad guys. What makes people fascinated and amused to watch movies? I think all kinds of movies are, in there own way, great. Practically the excitement of horror movies, and science and technology of science fiction movies, and action and enthusiasm in the action movies are some credits that makes people’s engrossment. Even so could all movies create an entertainment and make people experience their thoughts of imaginations in the real world. What are the most interesting things about these film genres, which could establish a fantasy world for their fans to escape to their imaginations and live with it? Participating in suspense, adventure, mysteries, and discovery amuse audiences every time they watch films. There is specific film genres that have most of this attraction to the audience, which make them most likely to have all secretes of attraction in it. These films genres have changed our out look and make us thinks better, because it provides us with a source of leisure; these movies are horror movies, science fiction movies, and action movies.
