Genres is the name given to the category, classification or group of films that have similar techniques or conventions. There are many type of genres. The primary (main) film genres are action, adventure, comedy, crime, drama, epics, horror, musicals, science fiction, war, and westerns. Genres are important because it helps the film viewers choose a movie that may interest and entertain them and it also gives them a brief idea of the storyline of the movie. For example, the story line in a romantic movie is that a guy gets his ideal girl after a conflict. Movies in a specific genre all share in similar techniques and convention. Action movies usually have continuous energy, rescues, escape plans, physical stunts, chases, fights, special effects, battles and races. The plot of action movie is usually about a hero (protagonist) or a group facing challenges or resolving problems caused by a villain (antagonist). The very first film of this genre is The Great Train Robbery which was released in 1903. This was a silent, short action-western movie. Action films continued to expand in the 80’s and 90’s. Action is a primary film genre. There are sub genres in action as well and many action movie overlap with other primary genres. Sub genres include super hero films, spy, crime, thriller, martial arts, disaster films, action-comedy action-war, action-adventure. These sub-genres have slightly different storyline and different budgets. For example, in a superhero film, the conflict is caused by a villain. Actors are important in this genre because they bring the characters to life because they have similar looks and personality as the characters. They are helping the audience visualise how a person would look like if they had superpowers and they are creating stereotypes on how an action movie character would look like. For example, a villain may have scars or intimidating body features while the hero looks better and more welcoming. The directors are important in an action movie because they mentor the cast and crew and give them instructions. The directors have the main roles in the movie because they make the movie according to what they visualised when they read the script. Action movies are the result of the creative visualisation of directors. The script writers are important in an action movie because the story line is the backbone of a good movie. When writing the script for an action movie the screenwriter must include good character development, believable characters and engaging plot points. The cinematographer is important in an action movie because they are the ones that shoot the movie. They must get the camera angles right for the audience to know who is in power and for it to be realistic and engaging. The cinematographer must shoot the movie in a way that the audience can perceive it the way it was intended to
