The focus of this essay is to study the genre codes and conventions in psychological thrillers which are a very popular ‘sub-genre’ of thriller movies which focuses heavily on its characters and integrates a variety of components from the mystery and drama genre as well as the thriller genre. The target audience for this particular genre would be those who live on adrenaline and love plot twists.
Psychological thrillers follow certain themes as their main focus of the story, some of themes include: death, reality, personal identity, existence and a purpose/meaning to life.
Typical conventions of a psychological thriller would be to create feelings of anxiousness and tension through the use of low lighting to produce shadows, quick edits interchanging between scenes and the use of various camera angles help increase the feeling of fear and shock which are often used during significant scenes.

As the colour red significantly symbolises death in cult classics such as Jaws, Scorsese uses symbolism throughout Shutter Island and to his advantage when entwining the characters in moral uncertainty. The key symbolic conventions used in this film is the idea of binary opposites due to the various concepts such as black and white being symbolic of good and evil in which these can be seen in the mise en scene of the characters clothing and persona throughout.
At the beginning of the film, the character (Teddy Daniels) is seen to be wearing dark clothing as he emerges towards the island in which this contrasts to later on in the narrative when he is seen to be wearing white, orderly uniforms; this contrast between clothing serve as binary opposites which are used to symbolise the moral ambiguity of Teddy
