Stories We Tell As the title of the documentary itself, there are many stories to tell. This film is based on the Polley family, that comes from Canada. Throughout the film, you quickly figure out how many secrets this family holds. The main purpose of Stories We Tell was to share the memory of the family, but maybe almost to remember Diane Polley as well. We learn in this movie that memories are stories we can share with one another. “Families create their own memories” states Rogerebert, an article. Every one of the Polley’s had a good memory of Diane, she was spunky, and fun to be around. The films main idea is memory. Sarah Polley, the daughter of Diane. In the beginning of the film all the storytellers were told to talk about their impression of Diane Polley. Each one had a positive impression on Diane. “You can’t talk about Diane, without talking about her laugh.” says Geoffrey Bowes. It was clear that Diane had a contagious personality, and was loved by many people. It was interesting to see how many memories that people held of her. “Her mother was a sexy free spirit who enchanted everyone she met, and an actor and singer of vibrant talent” ( The Guardian). Everyone had their own image of Diane. While most of the memories were positive, there were some negative, memories about Diane. In the movie Mort, Diane’s friend related Diane to a scared bird. This shows both sides of the stories, and shows the different opinions that people had on Diane Polley. The way this story is filmed is also very interesting.
