Fight for One’s Respect in Ralph Ellison's “Battle Royal” Ralph Ellison’s "Battle Royal", tells a short story, written in 1952. It is a short story about a younger African-American man, who has graduated high school. He lives in the South and is invited to give a speech at a social town gathering of the head of white citizens. The young African-American man is to take part in a “battle royal” with nine other African-Americans. On his grandfather's deathbed, his grandfather told his father to, "Keep up the good fight. Our life is a war and I have been a traitor all my born days. Live with your head in the lion’s mouth." (Ellison). Even if you are developing a new pride to bestrode on a newer family. In Ralph Ellison’s “Battle Royal”, you can feel the pride of the young African-American’s family. His grandfather wants him to “keep up the good fight” and to “live with your head in the lion’s mouth.” His grandfather wants to hold on to his pride that he once had. Unfortunately his parents have other feelings about his grandfather’s dying statements, as his parents tell him to “forget what his grandfather said” (Ellison). Having his grandfather tell him one thing, then his parents tell him the complete opposite mentally gets to the young man, to a point where he views his grandfather’s words as a curse. As the young man is fighting for his scholarship, he then fully understands his grandfather’s dying words. During this short story, the time frame is at the point where African-American have extended education opportunities. Unfortunately for some, they would endure the “Battle Royal” in order to receive such an opportunity. As the young man is giving his speech in order to redeem himself from the fight to win the scholarship, beaten, bloody from head to toe, fights through the pain and delivers and aw-inspiring speech. Even in his speech he mentions “social inequality”, to which the White men have to remind him of his place in society. That itself shows that even when it came to freedom of speech and that all men are created equal in that day of age, it was either a lie, or only applied to certain
