Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was born August 13, 1926, in Cuba to parents Angel Castro and mother Lina Ruz Gonzalez. Castro’s father, Angel, was a wealthy sugar plantation owner who was from Spain. Castro was raised very wealthy aside from all the poverty in Cuba, and went to the best schools, many of them being private schools. Castro graduated high school in late 1945. After high school Castro enrolled at the University of Havana. He majored in law, and joined the anti-corruption Orthodox group, a group in favor of the government to reduce corruption. Fidel also involved himself in the political climate of Cuban nationalism, anti-imperialism and socialism. After involving himself in Cuban socialism, Castro become very much interested in social justice, and in 1947 Castro went to the Dominican Republic to join an expedition in the attempt to overthrow Dictator Rafael Trujillo.
