Fidel Castro changed the lives of his people and modified his country as well as the whole world. Castro was the El Jefe (absolute leader) of Cuba for over forty years. This required him to be very intelligent and an outstanding speaker. He was a very powerful man and this was evident from childhood. Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was born August 13, 1926. His father Angel Castro Argiz was a unsophisticated and nearly illiterate. Fidel and father hit heads often. Fidel was the third of six children. His childhood seemed to be carefree and light as any other child. This changed though when Fidel got older. At the age of six he was sent to Santiago de Cuba with his brother Ramon and sister Angelita. There he caught onto the material at a quicker …show more content…

These men had no way to get their money back. This caused the United States to end all diplomatic relations with Cuba and to enforce a trade embargo that is still in place today. In April 1961, around 1,400 exiles from Cuba launched an invasion with the help of the CIA. Over 100 exiles were killed and the rest were captured only to be released in December of 1962 in exchange for medical supplies and baby food worth over $50 million.The months to follow Cuba was very dependent on the Soviet Union for not only economic support but also military support. In 1961 Castro closed the Cuban schools for a whole year. The former 6th grade students taught other Cubans how to read and write. The literacy rate came down from 38% to 3.9% in only 8 months. In October of 1962, the United states discovered nuclear missiles only 90 miles from Florida. After a nearly two week standoff, Nikita Khrushchev a Soviet leader removed the nukes against Castro’s wishes. “He used to be a raving lunatic, a total madman.
